THE CLASH De Montfort Hall Leicester, England aka CARDIFF '77  LP JAPAN

Released multiple times on various boots, this is the LP version of the gig. Missing from all boots are the the usual first two tracks the Clash had been playing, Londons Burning and 1977, 1977 figuring at the end of the set again though.

It is not from Cardiff, as Leicester gets a namecheck not once but thrice and from the songs played it is from the White Riot tour. Joe name checks the De Montfort Hall during Police and Thieves, a larger venue than Leicester Polytechnic. The NME lists the Leicester gig as the 28th May.

Taken from a BBC radio broadcast, this set is a wonderful example of the Clash in full first bloom. The sound is more or less the sound of the first LP, only faster, crisper and more aggressive. Topper Headon is on the kit, and his snappy playing gives the songs greater dimension than the Chimes sessions displayed. This is a great white-knuckle run-through the early material, punctuated by snaggle-toothed Strummer-isms like “Let’s Kiss! To the latest Clash love song” at the beginning of ‘Deny.’ Put away your UK version of the first LP and spin this instead. © www.blackmarketclash.com
