I don't own many girl group albums, not that the format is particularly plentiful nor easy to acquire (when's the last time that you found a Shangri-La's album that wasn't just an empty sleeve stapled to a wall?), but I'd have to imagine that they don't get much better than this. The third and final Chiffons album of their initial run of success, "Sweet Talkin' Guy" is pitched halfway between the NY girl group sound of the Shirelles and the harder-edged soul sound of the Marvelettes and Velvettes. The backing tracks really cook, the drums being particularly dominant. This coupled with several Brute Force-penned tracks and a Happenings cover indicate that the backing may be future labelmates the Tokens or Happenings, though neither of those groups were rocking this hard in 1966.

Contemporaneous hit "Sweet Talkin' Guy", for as good as it is, may actually be the most formulaic song on the album. The remainder of the tracks are muscled-up Rosie Riveter-esque takes on the classic girl group sound, retaining all of the hallmarks of the genre: sophisticated production, impeccable harmonies, and alluring yet out-of-your-league vocals. They remind me a bit of being a 1st grade boy watching from my side of invisible gender-dividing line at recess as the 2nd grade girls (who were nearly twice my size) congregated to talk about God knows what (Skip-It? Butterfly clips? Alan Alda?), wanting to go over to the land of the beautiful people but knowing that they would skewer me with so much as a slight giggle at the patches sewn into the knees of my uniform khakis.

Special mention should be made of the truly forward thinking "Nobody Knows What's Going On" released as a single the year before. The song is a labrynth of twisting chords, glissando harp, electric guitar, and swathes of echo giving just a hint of psychedelia utterly unheard of on any record in 1965 or 1966.

For as endearing as The Angels' original take of "My Boyfriend's Back" may be, the song's absent protaganist sounds like he's 12. Here the Chiffons sound like they're ready to finish you off themselves without the assistance of the erstwhile boyfriend, who is probably the size of Dikembe Mutombo (and not nearly as charitable).

A highly rewarding listening experience, lacking only a strong closer. Happenings cover "See You in September" is a surprisingly lightweight finale that sounds like it was recorded in the bathroom. The album would've been much better served with "Nobody Knows" B-side "Real Thing". Otherwise this album would be essentially perfect.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. PLEASE NOTE: a side-long hairline scuff noted on side 2, not expected to be audible.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
