The follow-up to the Chiffons' chart-topping girl-group classic "He's So Fine," "One Fine Day" was almost as good and almost as successful, reaching #5 in 1963. The big hook of the tune is its powerful staccato piano riff, played with a pounding finger-punishing force by the song's co-composer, Carole King. Like many a girl group goodie, the influence of doo wop could be felt, in the rapid "sho-be-doo-be-doo" harmonies, though these were updated and less coy than the average doo wop vocal arrangements of the 1950s. King was not a member of the Chiffons, true, but it's hard to underestimate the importance of her piano to the final recording, not only in the familiar opening riff (repeated again elsewhere in the song), but also in how she inserts ringing triplets in response to some of the lines in the verse. Though the lyrics are nothing exceptional, the melody's exceptionally catchy throughout, as you'd expect from a collaboration between Gerry Goffin and Carole King, perhaps the most successful pop-rock songwriting team of the period. John Lennon and Paul McCartney cited them as an inspiration, and if you want an A-B illustration of possible influences on their work, play the bridge of "One Fine Day" back-to-back with the bridge of, say, an early Beatles song like "It Won't Be Long"; the way they change keys and, particularly, the way the bridge rises to an exultant climax is similar. The Chiffons do the song proud with an extremely exuberant performance, and the sax break is quite similar to the instrumental breaks heard in several Phil Spector hits of the time, like the Crystals' "She's a Rebel." "One Fine Day," incidentally, was originally recorded by Little Eva (for whom Goffin-King had written several hits, like "The Locomotion"), but her vocals were erased and the Chiffons substituted in their place. Among those who've covered the song are Jackie Wilson, Aaron Neville, Rita Coolidge, and Natalie Merchant.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4   (front side) and 2 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots
