Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with several spindle marks, mostly on side two, side one has only a couple or three. The pictures do not show these well due to limited lighting, but several are present. This progressive ‘Krautrock’ masterpiece plays little short of perfection with two beautiful clean, hardly marked playing surfaces. Pressing quality is of the highest quality.

Rarity: This album was originally made as a private pressing in Germany and is one of the rarest classic rock albums ever made. First UK ‘commercial’ pressings were issued on this orange and burgundy label format in tiny numbers for the briefest time. Most copies are found on the more familiar cream and brown UA labels. Few record buyers would have shelled out on a new experimental German band at the time, only later did they establish themself in the new ‘Krautrock’ scene, Can being one of the pioneers of the new progressive age of the late 1960s then into the 1970s. By then, the orange and burgundy label was gone, thus this is a highly prized album within the Krautrock genre. They are seldom seen or offered, those few that do surface are invariably in poor condition – this record is little short of immaculate and plays the same. This for me, and many other collectors, being one of the greatest and groundbreaking albums of the late 1960s. Little had been heard like it before or since and ‘Monster Movie’ will always be a very special album for Krautrock and progressive rock fans.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably the definitive and most important of the German progressive bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Known affectionally as ‘Krautrock’ these types broke new barriers in rock music. Can took this art to new levels of creativity, spawning a host of immitators – few came close. Featuring the band’s original vocalist Malcolm Moony, a black American who gave his all. The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt’s karate chopping keyboard style was unusual, Czukay’s basslines had a throbbing twanging sound and rarely sounded better than on this album. Leipzeit’s percussion metronomic and is without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever, and Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the band’s music perfectly. Mooney, later replaced by the legendary Damo Suzuki, was a fine inventive vocalist who sung with great passion and intensity. With pulsating rhythms and extremes of style this is an exciting experience – was the world ready for this band? Can were the leading pioneers of this hugely creative genre. Not music for the casual listener, this had only limited sales, especially at the beginning, thus first issues are very hard to find with few even made on this lovely collectable label. This trip into the mind-bending world of Krautrock will appeal to all fans of this legendary band. This record, their recognised debut album is truly amazing, it takes rock music to new levels of brilliance. A mix of three shorter songs on side one, and the stunning ‘Yoo Doo Right’ that was recorded live over a long period and edited down to occupy all of side two. The album is brilliantly produced too and sounds absolutely sublime when turned up high. This copy on offer is a beauty that sounds fantastic and I never tire of listening to it. Can albums are becoming increasingly difficult to find now and finding a clean original of this is extremely so. For rock fans prepared to listen, this is around 40 minutes of the most compelling and original music you could wish for and I unreservedly recommend it.

Cover Condition and Details: NEAR EXCELLENT: a cover that seldom wears well. A single format with laminated front that coers all folds and ends on the spine edge. This is second printed sleeve, printed in England by the Upton Printing Group and virtually the same as the MacNeill Press version.

Cover Front & Laminate: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and any dulling seen under light only light on the rim area top and bottom. There is a moderate laminate crease near the bottom left corner area and a lighter one to its right. Any others are fine and light edge types, mostly on the spine. The graphic still looks superb with deep colour. Still a very fine looking front as-seen.

Cover Back: This unlaminated and matt black surface is well-known for wearing badly, overall this has fared well. Any rubbing patchy and only light. Any creasing few and light. With a heavy record inside for around 50 years, a trace of rim impression and gentle rubbing is rarely avoided at best, this has very little and few will have less. A fine looking back to complement the more colourful front.

Top Edge: Straight and unworn, the laminate smooth and fully intact.

Bottom Edge: Similar again, one small laminate chip and tiny rub only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still reasonably sharp with any thickening mild on the back edge towards the lower half, the front edge has hardly any, both are guaranteed untrimmed. The record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with with any compression patchy and very light. All text is present and strong as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A challenging cover, this gives polite clues of age, but generally remains attractive for one approaching half a century. Few who bought this album were hi-fi connoisseurs, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic, plain solid white unlined inner with its ‘PATENT Nos 1,125,555;’ code. The paper lightly darkened, very little creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably even better, this the cleanest example I have ever seen or heard. A beautiful record, made extra special with those classic first UK labels, with lovely shine and heavily pressed. The labels may indicate a few plays, but if so, with utmost care on a top-quality turntable. Spindle numbers are purely subjective anyway as some owners used the labels to guide the spindle to the hole. My honest, opinion based on looks and sound, its been very little used at all. Any surface traces are minuscule and faint, even under bright light. Not even a trace of stylus marks, seen in average room light, this is a gorgeous piece of rare vinyl. These true first UK-made, Cans albums are incredible difficult to find like this, this the rarest commercially available album made by them.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality This pioneering and groundbreaking progressive-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault and offering super dynamic sound with maximum detail. Put this on to a quality deck and hear for yourself. Czukay’s basslines are clean, tight and stand out richly in the mix and have a beautiful pulsating twang. Leipzeit’s drumming is astonishing with depth and power – the lengthy ‘You Doo Right’ on side two is amazing with an addictive quality. Some UA records were not always the best for silent pressings, but this first label copy excels. Any surface sound barely even registers with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. The pleasure in owning, holding and listening to a first United Artists copy gives that rare tingle factor – these are seldom seen or offered. A beautful record that does full justice to this mighty Krautrock album. Hi-Fi buffs will love this one too and it still blows away any digital version I have heard. For progressive and underground rock fans, and those for an ear to listen, this album is indispensable and essential, my highest recommendation applies. I just had to put this to disc for own future listening pleasure as I feel this is close to impossible to experience better.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
