Rarity: This album was originally made as a private pressing and is one of the rarest classic rock albums ever made. First ‘commercial’ pressings on the briefly available UA burgundy label are very scarce. This cream and brown label replaced the briefly available burgundy format but is still far from common.

Original Year of Release: 1969. This copy was pressed in the early 1970s, it still has the A-1/B-1 matrix and very early stampers.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument at all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were deep into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in high grading conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably the definitive and most important of the German progressive bands of the late 60s and early 70s. Known affectionally as ‘Krautrock’ these types broke new barriers in rock music. Can took this art to new levels of creativity, spawning a host of immitators - few came close. Featuring the band’s original vocalist Malcolm Moony, a black American who gave his all. The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt’s karate chopping keyboard style was unusual, Czukay’s basslines had a throbbing twanging sound and rarely sounded better than on this album. Leipzeit’s percussion was almost metronomic at times and is without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever and the late, great Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the band’s sound perfectly. Mooney, later replaced by the legendary Damo Suzuki, was a fine inventive vocalist who sung with great passion and intensity. With pulsating rhythms and extremes of style this is an exciting experience - was the world ready for this band? Can were the leading pioneers of this hugely creative genre. Not music for the faint-hearted, this had only fairly limited sales, thus first issues are hard to find. Early copies were never abundant, the Spoon issued later pressings can be found a little more easily, but will not have quite the same impact for the connoisseur collector. This trip into the wonderful world of Krautrock will appeal to all fans of this legendary band. This record, their recognised debut album is truly amazing, it takes rock music to new levels of brilliance. A mix of three shorter songs on side one, and the stunning ‘Yoo Doo Right’ that was recorded live, occupies all of side two. The album is brilliantly produced too and sounds absolutely sublime when turned up high. This copy on offer is a strong one that sounds fantastic and I never tire of listening to it. Can albums are fast becoming extinct now and finding clean lightly played copies is becoming harder, especially the early titles. This is a very clean record, which plays superbly and with a splendid cover too that has just minor rub traces on the dark unforgiving back. For rock fans prepared to listen, this is around 40 minutes of the most compelling and original music you could wish for and I unreservedly recommend it.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(+): and this being quite critical for a cover that seldom wears well. A single format with laminated front that wraps around the spineh. Printed in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front & Laminate: The laminate remains clear, fresh and shiny with no lifting and minimal traces of dulling or friction rubs. More under light, a central dull central line is seen – purely a manufacture issue and natural – it has modest visual impact unless scrutinised very closely. The lack of creasing and general ageing is a bonus and this vintage cover looks very impressive. The manufacture line may be an issue for the purist I suppose.

Cover Back: Unlaminated and black, a sure-fire recipe for ringwear, but this one has largely avoided it with any traces being very light and minor. A little mild surface rubbing near the right edge which in terms of this cover is very light. My camera flash has actually over-emphasised this. Mild handling traces are near impossible to avoid on this matt surface, any here are light and show little. Again, this has barely any creasing.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burr traces tiny and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, straight with barely any compression. The ends gently taper in manufacture and these areas retain excellent shape. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All in exceptional condition with barely even a hint of any wear. Excellent to near mint shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very attractive all round example of this delicate early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. This lovely item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): only marked down a little for mildish age discolour. That apart unworn, this is a plain white unlined inner. The previous owner put a lining inside to protect his record. This inner is barely creased and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very clean and shiny record, intense black and very solidly pressing. Clearly little played and sounding marvellous, any surface marks are very fine and faint as seen critically under angled light. These vintage Cans albums are hard to find like this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality This prog-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with super dynamic sound with loads of detail. Put this on to a quality deck and hear for yourself. Czukay’s basslines are clean and stand out richly in the mix and have a incredible twang, Leipzeit’s drumming is astonishing with depth and power - the lengthy ‘You Doo Right’ on side two is pretty amazing. I noted no pops or clicks and any surface sounds barely even registered. UA records were not always the best in the world for silent pressings, but this is one is exceptionally clean. There is no sound degrading or distortion, this has received very few plays I am certain. A truly great copy that does full justice to this mighty Krautrock album. Hi-Fi buffs will love this one too and it still blows away any CD version I have yet heard. A copy I can strongly recommend, this album is indispensable and essential.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
