Label/Format: CBS – deep intense orange with matt rough textured surfaces. This includes the first 33 speed indicator, later correctly changed to 33 1/3 (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both close to immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Records of this considerable age will rarely be seen or heard better.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. A fairly average weight for this label.

Rarity: Early-pressed stereo copies of this album are very scarce, especially so in this lovely clean, hardly played condition.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Issued quite shortly after the superb debut, this second album had a hard act to follow, but this is another majestic set. Once again, Gene Clark had enough great songs to complement the Dylan and traditional material, and it even charted highly at number 11 in the UK (17 in the US). Stunning songs beautifully performed and sung, their redention of the title song for me has never been bettered by anyone and remains definitive, the amazing thing is they just got better and better on later albums, this band were simply one of the greatest ever. This is a fantastic, and rarer stereo original record with a cover to match, early pressed and sounding sublime. Still in the mono era, this stereo version is significantly harder to find and they hardly get a great deal better. This a wonderful example for fans, collectors and music-lovers alike – folk-rock hardly got much better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the back via three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt, smooth unprotected card. Printed and made in England by Dawson Rossiter.

Lamination & Front: The front looks superb and blows away it’s considerable age – just think, this album was issued even before England won the Football World Cup in 1966, and this one from only a year after. The laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and no dulling at all, even with angled viewing under light. Made with very thin card, creasing is incredibly hard to avoid, but this has only three or four quite light ones that when viewed full-on, hardly even show anyway. This is a true dedicated stereo cover, not a stickered mono, these are much harder to find. It retains a lovely deep colour and the artwork of the early Byrds will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: Like the impressive front, the back has aged little with any discolouration very mild and gentle. Any marks of blemishes to the main matt back panel are minimal, tiny and few, the lack of creasing and ring wear, even rubbing highly unusual too. The three flipbacks are all very crisp and neat without the usual grime-line formation on their ends. All are solid and undamaged and still very white as well.

Top Edge: Quite straight and typically thin with barely any wear at all, still very smooth to the touch.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: This has a superb spine: solid, straight with minimal compression and still very white. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also being beautifully centred on quite a limited depth.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small and quite light, very fine to near excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage mid-60s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: simply for creasing on the corners, many owners used to do this on purpose to stop the record sliding out. An unlined open CBS promotional inner that shows albums up to 1967, and as the one-and-only owner or the retailer wrote the title and band name on one corner, it is for sure the one that came with the record. This has little other wear, it includes two immaculate window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs, generally clean and little aged.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This top-quality folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, copies of this vast age seldom survive anything like this clean and little used and are to be treasured when they do. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
