Both based out of Providence, Rhode Island, long-standing sludge metal innovators the Body and younger duo Sandworm commemorated a 2014 fall tour with the release of this split album. The album represents a few interesting extremes. The Body, formed in the late '90s, had by the time of this release toured the world for years, taking their sound from early, rough-hewn metal bombast into increasingly experimental waters, going so far as weaving threads of menacing acoustic folk and soul-churning power electronics into their 2013 epic Christs, Redeemers. Their sole contribution to this split release comes in the form of "The Manic Fire," a 16-minute sound collage of brittle, broken noise, harsh electronics, disembodied screams, and the occasional burst of relentless metal chugging. On the other side of the pendulum is Sandworm, a duo of Providence upstarts Ben Eberle and Pat Reilly, who not only make their proper debut with the songs on this collection, but also played their first shows outside of New England on the 2014 tour the album was made for. Where the Body have refined their sound into a far-reaching expansion of what metal is capable of, Sandworm's side of the split is a shockingly raw take on more traditional black metal. Far sloppier, slower, and less technical than a lot of the better known names in black metal, the rough presentation and palpable energy in Sandworm's ten tracks still manage to convey all the menace of the genre while presenting it with an obliviousness that's pure punk. The two sides of this particular coin stand as fantastic foils to each other, highlighting both the differences in levels of refinement that come with experience, as well as how each band is, at heart, ravenously committed to pushing the boundaries of their art, regardless of what phase of that development they might be in. ~ Fred Thomas
