Background...........

In the early 1960s, Brian Epstein’s father put Brian in charge of the record department of the family's newly opened NEMS (North End Music Store) on Great Charlotte Street, Liverpool. Apparently, Epstein worked extremely hard at the store to make it a success; and it subsequently became one of the biggest musical retail outlets in the North of England. The Epsteins opened a second store at 12–14 Whitechapel, and Epstein was put in charge of the entire operation.

In around 1963, Epstein introduced the now world-famous transparent NEMS plastic bag sleeves to contain LPs that had been purchased in one of the two NEMS stores. This was a massive success in that the NEMS brand was freely advertised widely when anyone bought a record from the store and, being transparent, people could see what the trendy young things of the time were buying.

People in Liverpool deliberately went to the NEMS store, wherever possible, in order to buy the latest Beatles record because of the Brian Epstein link. I am told by my elder brother (who originally owned this bag) that he bought an early “Please Please Me” gold & black label 1st pressing from the NEMS store but, alas, the record itself was lost a long time ago.

The condition of this NEMS bag is Excellent with just one very small hole in the bottom left corner of the front. I doubt that you will find a better one than this anywhere else. See front & back photos. I have also downloaded a photo of the original NEMS store where I'm told this bag was bought.
