Description

Beatles Yesterday and Today  LP  mono 3rd State “butcher” cover  G/VG

Catalogue identifier: Capitol T-2553

Please look over the images carefully.

A “3rd state” Yesterday and Today is one where the original (“1st State”) pressings were covered up with the “2nd state” new image “trunk” cover glued on, AND the trunk cover has been peeled off.

There is a wide range of success in the removal attempts. The results on this one are better than many, but not as good as more recent professional attempts.

The disc is in relatively good shape. Overall the sound is G/VG with occasional surface pops and clicks typical for an LP in this condition. But there is a problem on one track, the Side 1 opener, “Drive My Car.”

I have cleaned the disc but have not been able to eradicate the problem. In one section, in the latter half of the tune, it seems like some debris has accumulated causing a slight muffling of the sound, and two skips. The skips do not require intervention. The track skips a second or two of the sound and continues on.

As can be seen in the photos, there are several spots where the peeling attempt pulled off some of the original cover underneath. Only one of them is big: a lower right section of Ringo. The others are small and mainly on the edges. There are also some small spots, two where it appears the cover underneath is intact (top-left quadrant, in the background), but the glue residue remains. A careful attempt might succeed in removing this. I did not wish to risk damaging it further.

There is a name written lightly on the label of Disc 1.

In summary, I can only say that what you see is what you get. I have included images of the edges. Overall, they are quite good. Other than the two top corners, the edges are intact and unblemished. It is hard to find one of these without a splitting of at least one of the edges.

The inner sleeve is blank, and I don’t know if it’s original or not. It has no hole, and it is not creased.

Here is the wax matrix etching:

The trailing stars are tiny, and are not full asterix, as far as I can tell.
