Label/Format: Parlophone with matt, lightly textured surfaces. Side one has the ‘K T’ embossed tax codes, both letters are immaculate, totally unrubbed or worn. This pressing includes all the criteria for a very early pressing – all these details can be clearly seen on my label pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and scant hint of wear around the hole. An exceptional pair, side one especially have hardly any spindle traces at all, the record plays superbly with beautiful clean surfaces and dynamic warm, ultra detailed mono sound.

Rarity: Few Beatles standard issues are ‘rare’, but very early mono copies are hard to find in really top, little played condition. This album. after the success of the debut ‘Please Please Me’ had massive pre-orders and manufacture to meet demand was hectic. Such-much-so, some examples were contracted to Decca for extra pressing to simply meet demand. However, condition is the paramount factor with high percentages of albums played many, many times, often on the most basic of record players and worn out – mono copies usually the most wrecked. Little used very early albums are much harder to find with clean, little worn covers and two beautiful clean playing surfaces – this is such a copy – and it plays with stunning full-on clean sound. One purchased new by one owner, played only a tiny few of times (with considerable due care) and cover-protected. It even retains a very early original Parlophone Record promotional flyer – this text includes The Beatles ‘Please Please Me’ and this second album ‘With The Beatles’. This original flyer is immaculate and guaranteed original, this will seldom be seen or offered in its own right.

Brief Info: The Fab Fours second album and like the debut, it sold in vast numbers. Most will know the album well enough, this is a gorgeous example, very little played and retaining fantastic clean sound. The famous cover is really lovely with only scant clues of its considerable age, and inside was that Parlophone flyer from the time of issue – the first one of these I have seen. My play-grade was a revelation and I heard nothing to fault at all. A wonderful opportunity for fans and collectors. It came from the owner as the other Beatles I am offering, all of a similar very high standard.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): for a cover of great age and popularity, I think this easily merits this quality grade. A single front laminated format that covers all folds and ends on three large rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and fairly smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The polylined ‘Use EMITEX’ text inner sleeve is included as well as the rare original Parlophone Records promotional insert.

Lamination – Front: Truly stunning, I would be happy to grade this near mint as it has little really fault. It can be argued that age should have nothing to do with condition – but we all know it does to some degree. Handling, moving and storage are all factors, and the longer the cover has been around, the more likely it will get used and damaged. Well this one has little to fault, the front especially is magnificent and totally blows away it’s vast age. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with barely even a trace of lifting and minimal hints of dulling (critically under light). The lack of creasing has to be seen for real to be believed, two or three ultra fine small edge hairlines only, none whatsoever away from the sides. Not even a half moon or surface blemish worthy of note, the Fab Four look incredible. The backdrop still an ultra intense black, unaged or faded. All this with a heavy-pressed early record inside, it simply proves with care and dedication, a cover can last forever, this owned by one person from new and cover-protected. The difference more than apparent, a front to hold and admire and reminding yourself it was issued back in 1963.

Cover Back: The back is pretty close to the same quality – just towards the left is there is a little age toning which is very gentle and light. Any hint of grubbiness to the unprotected surface is minimal and the lack of creasing and rubbing makes it quite exceptional again. This matt panel also has no creasing, writing or damage, it’s superb being honest, a mere hint of age is perfect for my taste. The three large flipback are fantastic, very solid, still clean with neat ends that have avoided burring, any discolouration find and faint. Even on these, the laminate retains superb shine and the lack of creasing is something you will rarely ever seen. Just a couple of ultra fine hairlines only. Most now will be riddled with heavy creases and cracks, the spines broken and frail. We chalf and cheese, these flipbacks come close to reminding of as-issued. Both sides are very impressive indeed.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both stunning! Arrow straight, ultra smooth and totally unworn, chipped or scuffed, the laminate for both is virtually like new. A very rare sight indeed on any cover, let alone this one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening mild and light, these storage edges are still neat with no damage, probably reiterating the record has not been removed/entered many times.

Spine and Text: Again superb – clean, very solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends lightly pinched in manufacrtured. All the text is pristine under the very smooth, clear and unpeeled or cracked laminate, also nicely centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs or wear minuscule, excellent or better shape mostly retained with no knocks (even on the bottom right that usually catches something eventually).

Cover Summary: A very strong and highly attractive all-round example of this famed 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better (or even match). This beautiful item should please many, and possibly even most collectors (unless nigh-on ‘perfection’ is mandatory, and good luck finding those).

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better, mainly marked down for bottom corner creasing. This has the original polylining – these were replaced by the tracing paper style lining on subsequent albums for a while. Both window circles crisp and untorn, the lining still fresh and quite clear, all edges naturally intact. The paper has not darkened much at all, it some quite mild general crinkle. At this age, I think it’s earned the right. It has the USE ‘EMITEX’ and ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Parlophone Promo Insert: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better with only the merest hint of any creasing and no tears or folds. Printed on thin paper both sides and guaranteed original, this catalogues Parlophone records at this time, and as stated above, lists both this album and ‘Please Please Me’. Historically interesting and important, it more than emphasises what popular music was like at this time with little else on offer other than middle of the road easy listening music and artists. We all know what happened when the world discovered The Beatles. So a piece of Parlophone history in fantastic, almost as issued condition that will not be seen often.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): which hardly does this 1963 popular mono record full justice. Like the cover an extra (+) is arguably merited as this has been played so little and sounds fantastic. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. Any surface marks are very wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Those super-fine traces seen when a record has been wiped by an Emitex cloth, totally harmless and almost invisible unless put directly under a very bright lamp (as I always so). No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super mono record that should please many, if not most collectors (with the same reference as the cover).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: These vintage Beatles classics are a thing of genuine beauty when seen and heard as such. This classic second album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I am more than aware that is a bold statement for any mono record this age – and even more especially for one of the decade’s most popular bands and albums. This offers strong, distortion-free beautiful dynamic mono sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superbly produced by George Martin, the detail and warmth embedded in these unworn grooves was a revelation. Any surface sounds barely even registered, being honest, I heard none worthy of mention and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this amazing rare 1 G / 1 RM stamper ‘first’ pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am more than certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this incredible record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
