Description
THE BEATLES is the (embossed) title of the record, more affectionately known as 'The White Album'. Four sides of great Beatles sounds from a musically matured foursome with no studio constraints. By the time of this release they were perhaps comfortable with their stardom and public acclaim, and were also starting to branch out on their own separate ideas and songs. There was perhaps a competitive edge coming through - resulting in one of the finest records ever made! This issue is THE VERY FIRST top-entry UK MONO release. John Lennon himself had a lot of regard for the Mono version of this album, perhaps he preferred the mix or general sound - in his influences it was the medium he grew up with! What is exciting here; THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE VERY FIRST OFF THE PRESSES - the original buyer would probably have pre-ordered this record well before it was available for purchase by anybody! Imagine, of all the millions of fans awaiting this album's release, the very first several thousand copies went to the most fervent Beatles-hungry fans - THIS IS RECORD NUMBER 2,076 !!! I HAVE SPOKEN WITH SEVERAL IN THE BUSINESS OF RECORD SALES, AND NOT ONE HAD SEEN OR HANDLED A NUMBER THIS LOW! Okay, here are the pressing details; APPLE PMC 7067 matrix #s XEX 709-1/710-1 (first disc), PMC 7068 has matrix #s XEX 711-1/712-1 (second disc). All photos and paperwork included and in decent shape, the photos flat, uncreased un-marked. The poster/lyric sheet is intact but 'delicate' at the seams with signs of some separation beginning in places. British vinyl is quality, no pressing 'shadow' or defects present. Discs are in VG to VG+ condition, having a fair amount of light surface scuff, and a few lines, and are showing that they have seen many plays. Side 2 especially, has some marks that can be felt, but playing reveals a remarkable clarity and though there are clicks on a couple of tracks, the music dominates. What I like about these earliest pressings is that even the Mono can be said to have outstanding fidelity and clarity - creating a realism in the projection of sound that I have NOT found anywhere else. The sound leaps from these deep-grooves in a way that is not dim, nor does it clutter or distort. Personally, I have this impression of the earlier releases too, where the original first pressings project with more fullness. Lables are all clean, showing NO age-staining or lines from pen or anything like that. The reflection on them does show spindle marks from playing. The heavy card laminated cover is VG+, complete, clean, a few small creases, light wear and some aging. There are splits at the middle bottom edges where the top-loader gatefold has been used that way. A very rare copy of this famous record, an extremely hard to find 1st edition!! Winning bidder please add $6 for postage in USA, international/insurance extra.
