Visual grading
Both vinyls are in immaculate, pristine condition and are easily the most impressive looking ones I have ever seen. They have a stunning glossy, mirror like surface and have hardly been played. The first record has no spindle wear at all and I cannot detect any hairlines either. The second one has only a mega small amount of spindle tracing on the S4 label and none on S3. There are only a couple of very faint hairlines on S3. I cannot stress enough just how good they look or play for that matter! You could easily be mistaken for thinking that these were new vinyls. Absolutely stunning!
Play grading
S1 begins with a superb version of 'Back In The U.S.S.R.'. With no lead in static on the 'jet engine' the track plays with stunning stereo sound and no distortion. The quiet intro on 'Dear Prudence' plays beautifully with no obvious 'background' and the remainder is near perfect apart from one very light click. 'Glass Onion' and 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' both impress with stunning depth and warmth and no interference again. Thus far there is practically no static on the run ins and run outs, the clarity is first class. This quality continues on the remaining tracks with perhaps just a little distortion on the top end during the classic 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. That is often the case on these early pressings anyway and it still plays extremely well and the long fade out has no 'background' whatsoever. 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' ends the side with no interference apart from some 'top end' distortion again. It is worth pointing out that there is no intrusive interference on this side at all apart from one faint click. No crackle and certainly no loud pops or jumps.
'Martha My Dear' has wonderful audio again with only a little background static on the intro, very minor though and certainly not intrusive. 'I'm So Tired' plays with exemplary sound and 'Blackbird', one of the quieter tracks, is immaculate and easily grades as Mint- the quality is just breathtaking. The little classic 'Piggies' is another Mint- track with audio at its very best, wow! This quality continues and what is very impressive is how well the quieter tracks play. 'I Will' and 'Julia' quite simply have audio of the highest calibre. For a final track to play so cleanly is rarity and is quite possibly the best version I have heard on a relatively early pressing.
'Birthday' on S3 is 100% stunning! The power and depth throughout is of the highest standard and plays as Mint- without doubt. No 'background' or distortion and the bass is so strong in the mix. 'Yer Blues' practically equals that standard with just a very minor touch of static on the long fade out. 'Mother Nature's Son' is again sublime in its clarity, just a handful of mega light dust ticks. I do not think I have heard this super quiet song play so clearly, it is superb. '...Monkey' has superlative audio and there is no distortion which is a rarity for this powerful track. This quality continues and even 'Helter Skelter' sounds incredible with no distortion, the power is just stunning. As an example of this immaculate audio the first fade out has no 'background' at all, a Mint- version without doubt. 'Long, Long, Long' ends the side with impeccable audio once again, it sounds as good as the day it was first released.
'Revolution 1' on S4 has a couple of dust ticks on the intro and then plays 'as new' it is that good and even the fade out plays with perfect precision. The quiet intro on 'Honey Pie' plays with stunning quality with barely any background static and the remainder is equal to that. 'Savoy Truffle' and 'Cry Baby Cry' also play with superb depth and clarity and no 'background' whatsoever. Whilst 'Revolution 9' may not be everyone's favourite ! the playback was first class and definitely plays as new. 'Good Night' ends the side with very impressive audio once more and only one click very near the end.
In summary this is probably the cleanest stereo pressing I have ever heard. I do not over-grade as my feedback testifies and it is not an exaggeration to say there is hardly any interference. With complete silence in the dead wax between nearly all of the tracks and only a couple of clicks the audio could hardly be any better. It is rare to find this iconic LP in such beautiful condition and you would be hard pressed to find a better stereo pressing with such a low number.
Gatefold cover
This G & L laminated 'side loading' gatefold has only a little shelf wear and has been preserved very well. The edges and spine are in superb condition and have no wear at all and even the corners remain In great shape with only the bottom right one having a little creasing. The opening edges have very little handling wear. The laminate throughout has no splitting or lifting but towards the top of the front cover there is a fine scrape type line that has caused a little wear but it isn't that visible. The inside of the gatefold and the back cover are in immaculate condition. So whilst this isn't one of the earliest gatefolds it is certainly one of the cleanest numbered ones I have ever seen.
Inner sleeves
The die-cut plain white inner sleeves have no splits or tears and only a minor amount of creasing. They have the patent number on the left and Made In Great Britain on the right.
The labels
The Apple labels are in superb shape with only a little spindle wear on the S4 label. There is a name written on S2 & 4 but it is in black ink on the black background so is only visible at a certain angle.
The Portraits & Poster
The four photos are in great condition with only the odd corner having a tiny crease. The lyric/collage poster is quite possibly the cleanest I have seen and has no marking, pin holes etc.
