Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with only relatively light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This superb unbanded stereo copy plays beautifully.

Rarity: Moderate in terms of units sold. Seen slightly less in the stereo mode. The most important factor bar none is condition – and this copy in very fine condition for all parts – it offers fantastic stereo sound which I feel brings out the psychedelia even better. An album regularly seen at fairs, but most in heavily played, often trashed condition and hardly worthy of a second look or listen. This was a genuine thrill to play-grade and most would never want or need to upgrade this record.

Brief Info: Arguably, the world’s most famous popular music album and cover. It’s concept and sound broke new ground in recorded music and even today, it has hardly aged at all. Most will know the album well enough. The copy on offer here is a standard first issue stereo and complete. It looks great and plays beautifully and all elements of the package are impressive with all details below.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. A fully laminated gatefold format with the standard inverted text spine. The inside has two huge flipbacks that are wider than standard. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the graphic inner sleeve and picture insert sheet.

Lamination – Front & Back: A really lovely looking front, and what sets it apart from many if the depth of colour of the artwork. The famous graphic looks superb with its deep, rich and vibrant colour as this one offers – many examples are much paler – so-much-so, I almost consider them to vary enough to be considered variants. It simply depends on which run of print they were made on, but the colour can, and does vary considerably. This is one of most lush and deeply coloured Sgt. Pepper covers I have had to date and it looks quite striking as I hope my pictures show (check out the band close-up, which looks amazing and hopefully shows exactly what I mean). the laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal dulling and no lifting. Most of any fine laminate creases on the edges with just a tiny few very fine half moons towards the right away from – they register little. A hint of corner discolouration on the top pair with any corner wear minimal. This most famous of front covers will not prove easy to find better or more richly coloured.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The two entire surface beneath the flipback ends is new flawless with the laminate shiny and very clear, any blemishes tiny and faint with the graphic again very deep in colour. Both flipbacks on this example are huge, and again they do vary. The only small issue that stops a highly grading is the ends tend to stick and pull when closed, few avoid this totally and other similar covers do exactly the same. Zappa’s Sgt. Pepper spoof cover ‘We’re Only in it For the Money’ has the same inside flipback problem. Here any surface pulling to the flipback ends is pathcy and light as-seen, avoid this totally is fairly unusual and in the scheme of things, these large flipbacks have not suffered very much. This apart, they have little else to fault being solid, neat and generally clean.

Top Edges: Solid, smooth and barely worn at all. A hint of gentle curl which fully laminated covers tend to so over time, here only light.

Bottom Edges: Virtually unworn and these still straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both naturally open, all four edges show minimal thickening.

Spine and Text: Generally still solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Just a couple of fine surface cracks with most laminate retained. A notorious spine that often wears badly, often shedding much, or even all its laminate as opening and closing causes natural recesses and text sinkage. Here, all the text lettering is present, virtually unworn and still easily read under the solid and mostly unpeeled laminate – a little near the bottom corner only.

Corners: Any tip rubs very small and light, very fine and mostly nearer excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks, any tip creasing tiny and light.

Cover Summary: A very strong and striking all-round example of this very famous 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item with its much deeper colour graphics should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): another fragile part of this set, this unlined thin paper graphic inner sleeve is very hard to find neat and without often heavy edge splits and tears. Even prone to ring wear and rubbing, this has hardly anything like that and remains quite clean and still fresh. A little quite light creasing to one top corner but all the edges are solidly intact. Not all Peppers includes this inner, some just had a plain white one instead, but of course, always best to have this far more interesting one. Overall, this will prove difficult to find much better or more intact, even the top entrance edges are neat and still crisp with no tears. It was phased out altogether when the label format changed at the end of the decade, so these inners are not as common as you may think – especially this nice.

The Graphic Insert: EXCELLENT(++): included in all pressings of this album as far as I know. A card insert printed on one side, the reverse side is plain natural card colour. Again, this has deep colour, and yes, these also vary considerably, this is uncreased and still clean. Any handling traces only few, gentle and very light, the insert fully intact and guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. This has the unbanded surfaces as clearly seen on my record pictures, some, and especially later pressings had the usual visual gaps between the songs. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This psychedelic masterpiece plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A masterclass in production by George Martin, I still feel the effects and sounds benefit more from a stereo pressing – but the mono version is fantastic as well – they sound different and present the songs on an alternative way. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the merest trace as the album fades before the famous looped ending on side two, and this being ultra critical. Superbly produced, mastered and engineered and a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Even the challenging vocal and introduction to ‘She’s Leaving Home’ is sharp and precise and plays the song superbly. Few available copies will match or outperform this early ‘first’ pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly (certainly in context) and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. My play-grade on this proved awesome and a genuine thrill. Not one to lose lightly.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
