"Penny Lane" was written by Paul and recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions. Lyrically, “Penny Lane” was the product of two major inspirations: John's "In My Life," which began as a nostalgic look back at places from his early life, and Paul's own original concept for the Beatles’ next album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which began life as a concept album about childhood. Musically, the song was greatly influenced by the Beach Boys 1966 single "God Only Knows" in its heavily syncopated rhythm and excess orchestration. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked “Penny Lane” at Number 449 on its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All-Time.”

"Strawberry Fields Forever" was written by John, being inspired by his memories of playing in the garden of a Salvation Army house named "Strawberry Field" near his childhood home. Three weeks after its release, Time magazine hailed the song as "the latest sample of The Beatles' astonishing inventiveness". In 2004, “Strawberry Fields Forever” was ranked number 76 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time". In 2010, Rolling Stone placed it at number three on the “100 Greatest Beatles Songs”. The song was ranked as the second-best Beatles’ song by Mojo, after "A Day in the Life".

"Strawberry Fields Forever" and “Penny Lane” were intended for the Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP, but, due to the lack of recent Beatles’ material, they were instead released in February 1967 as a double A-side single. Beatles producer George Martin has stated that he believes the pairing of "Penny Lane" with "Strawberry Fields Forever" resulted in the greatest single ever released by the group.

The version of “Penny Lane” issued on the Promotional 45 in the U.S. and Canada became an instant rarity because it contained an earlier mono mix of the song that was different from the commercially released 45. This mix (known as mix RM11) featured a trumpet overdub over the ending of the song that was shaved off of later mixes, including the mix heard on the commercial single and the Magical Mystery Tour EP in the UK and the Magical Mystery Tour LP in the U.S. For a 1980 U.S. compilation by Capitol, titled The Beatles Rarities, a fake stereo mix of this version was created by editing in the trumpet riff ending on a newer stereo mix of the song.

This auction is for an original Capitol Records Promotional 45 of “Penny Lane” backed with “Strawberry Fields Forever”. This Record is absolutely authentic. The Record is in exceptionally good condition, with almost pristine labels, both sides, and very little, if any, wear on the vinyl. Overall, this is Very Good+ at a minimum. This is a fabulous addition to any serious collection.
