The Beatles : Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1/1 1st Mono press (Wide Spine)
This very early first mono pressing plays to an excellent standard overall but with some static here and there. However, there are no clicks or pops and what is very impressive is the condition of the 'wide spine' cover. It has been so well preserved and not often opened in my opinion.
What makes this first pressing even more collectable is just how early it is. You very rarely see a G stamper and whilst there are two on S1 (GG) it is nonetheless still very early in the pressing run. Based on the GRAMOPHLTD this means S1 was produced with the 11th stamper and S2 with the 8th as it has only a single L stamper. This is certainly one of the earliest versions I have ever seen.
The S1 label also has the extra 'dot' so it shows as SOLD IN.U.K. etc
It comes complete with a stunning red 'fool' inner and cut out card insert.

Play grading
'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' has only a small number of light ticks on the 'audience' intro and as the vocal comes in the playback is very strong indeed with barely any static. It continues in the same way and overall deserves an Ex+ grading. There are no loud clicks or pops at all.
The segue into 'With A Little Help From My Friends' is perfect and the couple of verses and chorus also play with stunning clarity. From then on there really are no negatives, the clarity is very impressive. There are a couple of very light ticks towards the end and the odd dust mega light static tick but in essence there is no obvious intrusion on the audio. Ex+
The classic 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' has only very minimal static on the intro and plays very clearly indeed. The same can be said for the remainder. There are no clicks or pops just a minimal touch of light static in the background. I would say this grades as Ex+ again. A very clean fade out also.
'Getting Better' has a little more static in the background but only fractionally. In my opinion it is still minor and non-intrusive and as I often say it could be reduced when played as mono - I am playing this through my stereo system. It remains an excellent listen and again there are no clicks, pops, skips or crackle. Let's give it an Ex grade although many sections are better than that.
The intro on 'Fixing A Hole' is perfect as is the first opening vocal section. Thereafter there is only very minimal light static and again Ex+ is more than deserved.
As is common 'She's Leaving Home' does have more static and as Beatles' audiophile will tell you this unavoidable! I'm not exactly sure why, I'm not technically proficient in the art of producing vinyl, but there is more intrusion on the audio here. On the plus side there are no clicks or pops but I will grade as VG which I believe is a fair reflection of the audio.
The final track 'Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!' plays better and there is no obvious inner groove distortion at all. Yes there is a little static background here and there but overall I think Ex- is correct.

The intro on 'Within You Without You' plays with immaculate precision you would think it was pressed only yesterday. The first percussive/bass element is the same and as the vocal begins there is still no intrusion. A stunning start! Only as it proceeds can you detect the odd very light tick but this is being very critical! This is a very impressive version and plays with great clarity and definition throughout. There is just a little more static towards the end but I only mention this to be 'complete' in my grading, it really is very minor. I think an Ex+ is infinitely deserved here although the majority is better!
'When I'm Sixty-Four' plays very well but as per S1 there is a little static every now and then but again I'm sure the audio quality could be enhanced. By no means is it loud and there are no clicks or pops. Ex
'Lovely Rita' is of the same standard with no real intrusion. Just minimal background static here and there but the music and vocals play very clearly.
'Good Morning, Good Morning' has the usual static distortion on the 'cockerel' intro! From then on it plays superbly with barely any static - the audio is very powerful and there is no distortion on the top end. Ex+
The 'high octane' percussive/bass intro on the 'Sgt. Pepper's...' reprise is stunning! There is no interference and it proceeds in exactly the same way with no interference. An Ex+ version for sure but arguably Near Mint.
The acoustic intro on 'A Day In The Life' plays perfectly and it's only when the piano comes in that you can hear a little static. The first verse is similar in that there is some static but there are no clicks or pops. As it builds into the first crescendo the playback is very strong and has no distortion. The more up tempo section has only minimal static and the 'orchestral' section is again affected by some static but in saying that the music still plays very clearly. The remainder is similar and the final 'crescendo' is very powerful with no distortion - the final piano note has some static right at the beginning but it then plays very cleanly with no intrusion. The 'nonsense' track at the end of the run out grooves plays very well with only a little static! I will grade as VG but I'm sure the playback could be improved when played as a mono record.
In summary this rare first pressing plays with excellent quality for the majority but as described there is some static in the background every now and then and on a couple of tracks it is a little more intrusive. A positive is there are no clicks or pops and the vinyl is actually very clean. I guess the real rarity value in this LP has to be the very low stampers and the fact that the wide spine cover is in such lovely condition.
Visual grading
The vinyl is very clean with only a few faint hairlines and still retains a very strong glossy look. There is one small hairline scuff on S1 but that really is the only negative and it has no affect on the audio. There are no scratches and considering how early this first pressing is it is in excellent condition. There is not too much spindle wear and the run out grooves are also very clean.
The Gatefold
The famous G & L mono cover is in superb condition and is easily one of the finest 'wide spine' versions I have ever seen. As you can see photos the wide spine has retained its shape incredibly well and has only a little wear on the top corner. The bottom corner is in great shape as the four right hand corners, there is just a very minor crease top right on the front cover. The edges are beautifully clean with no rubbing and the opening edges have barely any handling wear, there is just one very small area of crimping. The laminated front cover is stunning with no marking and only a couple of minor laminate creases. as usual there are a small number of creases around the edges but they are faint. The back cover is equally as impressive with again only a couple of insignificant small creases. The inside of the gatefold is in fantastic condition and what is immediately noticeable is how strong and vibrant the colours still are. Both panels are so clean with no marking and for once there is no damage to the inner spine, just a very minor touch of light staining either side towards the top. The top flipbacks are 'as new' and overall this is a stunning early 'wide spine' cover. I haven't seen many as good as this!
The 'Fool' Inner Sleeve & Cut Out Card
This might also be the finest red 'fool' psychedelic inner I have seen also! It is in superb condition with no side splits or tears (how rare is that!) and barely any creasing. It has only a couple of very faint marks but for 53 years old it can hardly be faulted! The cut out card is also near perfect with only one very minor crease and one very faint barely visible mark near the bottom edge.
The Labels
The yellow/black Parlophone labels have no marking or writing and not very much spindle wear either. The KT tax code is stamped on the S1 label. As stated the S1 label also has the extra 'dot' so it shows as SOLD IN.U.K. etc
