The Beatles : Rubber Soul 1/1 1st Press - rare Loud Cut edition
This Loud Cut pressing plays with superb audio overall and very little 'background', there are no loud clicks or pops at all. Visually it is not the best as it does have some marking, mainly on S2, but the audio really is very impressive.
This first pressing had a so-called muddy bass and aggressive vocal sound and production was soon stopped hence the rarity. This is also the earliest first pressing with the Sans-serif font on the labels and the * credit indicator has a space after the song titles.
The cover is in excellent condition with only some wear on the bottom flipback on the back cover. The original Emitex is in superb condition.

Play grading
S1 plays with superb audio and there is barely any 'background'. Starting with 'Drive My Car' the clarity is stunning and the quieter 'Norwegian Wood' also impresses with wonderful audio - no clicks or pops and almost zero static. There is a little crackle right at the end of 'You Won't See Me' but apart from that it plays perfectly. The remainder of the side does not disappoint and the final two tracks play with very little distortion. 'Michelle' has one light tick but overall plays with very clean audio.
Despite S2 having a little more marking the audio is superb! The opening three tracks grade as Mint- the playback could not be any stronger. 'In My Life' is almost as good with just one light tick and 'Wait' just has a little intermittent static albeit very quiet and non-intrusive. The final two tracks play very clearly with only minimal inner groove distortion. For a rare 'Loud Cut' pressing the audio is very impressive on both sides and there is no obvious interference whatsoever.
Visual grading
This is a vinyl that plays far better than it looks - 60s vinyl was very strong and robust! It is certainly not in poor condition and S1 is actually very clean with only one obvious long hairline which has no affect on the audio. S2 has no scratches but there is more marking - you can see some hairlines and 'speck' type marks and there is also an area of hairline scuffing almost in the shape of a P but again this has no real affect on the audio. So not visually perfect but it is certainly cleaner than many you see.
The Cover
The E.J. Day cover is in excellent condition overall with only a little shelf wear. The edges and spine and nigh on perfect and only the two bottom corners have a minimal amount of wear. The opening edge has very little handling wear and is very clean indeed. The laminated front cover is in superb order with only a small number of faint creases and the back cover has barely any marking. The only obvious wear is on the lower flipback which has some creasing in a couple of areas almost like it has come loose. This is unfortunate because apart from that the flipbacks are in great shape with very little staining on the edges. The white background has no marking and is super clean. A very respectable 'Loud Cut' cover overall.
The Emitex Inner
The original inner is in lovely condition with no side splits or marking and only a little creasing.
The Labels
The yellow/black Parlophone labels are in great shape with no marking or writing and only a little spindle wear.

This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
