The Beatles : Revolver 2/2 2nd Press

This has to be the finest 2/2 second pressing that I have ever listened to.  The clarity and depth of the audio is phenomenal and there is no interference on either side!  You can see this has been played by the spindle wear but this can only ever have been played on 'high end' equipment and also very well cared for down the years.  I have never heard sonic quality like it on such an early pressing and it easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE pressing.  An archive time-warp classic for sure!  It may not be the first press 'withdrawn' mix but it immediately followed on from that pressing and is still clearly a very collectable album in its own right.  The vinyl is also visually very impressive with only a small number of faint hairlines.

The laminated E.J. Day cover is in fantastic condition with no obvious wear and has been beautifully preserved down the years.  The original paper inner is also in excellent order.

This second pressing was pressed in late '66 according to the Beatles-collection site and has the 'Variation B' labels.  They have Times New Roman Font but still has the incorrect Dr. Robert spelling on the S2 label.  The cover also has Dr. Robert on the back and a small mono on the front.

The vinyl is in lovely condition and very much retains its original jet-black glossy sheen.  There are no marks or scratches on either side and only a small number of faint hairlines.  There are a couple on S1 that are a little more obvious but they still do not stand out as such, they are still faint.  There is no dulling of the surface area, no 'bag rash', no groove wear and whilst the labels do have some some spindle wear they are still very clean with no marking.  The run out grooves are also super clean and you can clearly read the matrix info.  The KT tax code can clearly be seen on the S2 label.

Play grading  

The lead in grooves are incredibly clean with no 'background' so already you are expecting good things from the audio and it does not disappoint!  The countdown intro on 'Taxman' is as clear as it would have been back in '66 and the first vocal is faultless.  It continues in the same precise way with no intrusion and Harrison's first brief solo is stunning!  The remainder plays with sublime quality, including the fade out, and I do not think I have ever heard such a strong start to this classic album.  The clarity and definition of the audio is exceptional and whilst it has been played a number of times it can only have been on 'high end' equipment thus retaining its original sonic quality which is just unbelievable!  This is easily a Mint- start.

With complete silence in the dead wax the into on 'Eleanor Rigby' is 'as new' and the first verse is equally as good.  From then on it plays beautifully with no ticks, clicks, pops and no background static either.  A couple of barely audible dust ticks but another Mint- version in my opinion.

'I'm Only Sleeping' plays with outstanding clarity and depth from start to finish with...no interference.  As per the previous tracks every note is so clean and precise.  So often when playing records from this era there will be some static but so far absolutely zero!  I cannot believe what I am hearing, there is clarity and then there is STUNNING clarity like this!  Mint-

I cannot help but get a little overenthusiastic when presented with audio of this quality!  The tabla intro on 'Love You To' can only be described 'as new' it is phenomenal!  This quality maintained during George's first vocal and it proceeds in exactly the same way with no intrusion on the perfect audio.  No ticks or clicks etc just pure unadulterated Mint audio, who needs a minus!  This is audio of the highest standard.

'Here, There And Everywhere' has just a minor hint of barely audible static on the intro (not sure why I am mentioning it really!) and continues to play with wonderful quality.  It plays so clearly with no interference although I did detect one light static sound on the final couple of seconds.  Perhaps Mint- would be fair but I will grade as Near Mint+ just to err on the side of caution.  A beautiful version regardless.

'Yellow Submarine' plays with flawless audio throughout with, you guessed it, no sign of any interference.  Mint-

'She Said She Said' ends the side with very impressive audio and with only very minimal inner groove distortion and I do mean very minimal!  And this is a mono record being played through a stereo set up - it is without doubt one of the 'cleanest' versions I have heard and Near Mint is very much deserved.

The intro on 'Good Day Sunshine' has one very light tick and then plays with exceptional quality with, as we are expecting, no interference!  The clarity cannot be faulted and Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

The 'high octane' intro on 'And Your Bird Can Sing' is 'as new' and it continues to play with great power and clarity.  There is no distortion, no interference at all.  Mint-

Again there is complete silence in the dead wax and 'For No One' then plays with imperious quality throughout with not one tick let alone anything worse.  A stunning Mint- version.

This quality is more than kept during 'Dr. Robert' which plays with faultless precision from the first note to the last with no interference.  The fade out again provides further evidence of the clarity on offer here with no static etc at all.  It is proving difficult to describe each track in an individual way such is the quality! Mint-

The quiet build up intro on 'I Want To Tell You' plays perfectly and the opening vocal is of the same 'high end' standard.  From then on it plays in the same way with no interference.  By this point you might expect some inner groove distortion but I did not detect any.  The vocal right at the end is so clean and I honestly heard audio here that I have never noticed before, that is an indication of the clarity we have here.  Mint-

'Got To Get You Into My Life' plays with superb audio and 'knocks spots off' so many other versions I have heard.  If I am being super critical there is perhaps just a light touch of inner groove distortion but it certainly does not impact on the 'listen'.  Again perhaps I am just being too harsh but it certainly grades as Near Mint and may well grade as Mint- when played as a 'mono' record.

The classic 'Tomorrow Never Knows' ends the album with supreme quality and remarkably there is no inner groove distortion.  The sonic quality is out of this world and having played it twice now I can confirm there is no 'background'.  The clarity and power of the audio is second to none and Mint- is fully deserved.  What a version and what an album!

In summary this very collectable second pressing plays to a standard you so rarely find today.  I won't use terms like 'impossible to find' etc but 'rare' I think is entirely justified.  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is on another level and it qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE album in my opinion.  In essence there is no interference and how many Revolver's do you find like this today?  We all know the answer!  I grade honestly as my feedback testifies and it is not in my interests to over-grade any record.  This is why I listen to every album in full so as to provide a 'complete' grade and I am confident in saying this is probably the finest example of this classic that I have ever had the pleasure in listening to.  I am positive the winning bidder will not be disappointed.  A stunning example of this very early pressing.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The laminated E.J. Day cover is in lovely with barely any wear and certainly nothing obvious.  The edges and thin pinched spine are so clean and have no rubbing and all you can detect on very close inspection is one very small 'ding' on the top edge and an even smaller one on the bottom edge.  Hardly worth noting really as they are so small!  The corners are also in exceptional condition with no obvious wear and the opening edge is so close to perfect  also.  The front cover is practically 'as new' with no marking and only a small number of barely visible creases around the edges.  The back cover, so often badly worn, is in beautiful condition with no marking and no staining on the flipback edges which is very rare.  Incidentally they are still firmly attached to the cover and remain perfectly clean also.  This cover is not far off Near Mint but it has to be Near Mint- at the very least, it STUNNING!

The plain white die-cut inner has no side splits, tears or marking and only very minimal creasing.  It has Made In Great Britain and Patents Applied For printed on one side.
