Description

The Beatles : Revolver 1st Mono Press 2/1 'Withdrawn Mix'

This Beatles' first pressing is one of the most collectable and is of course known as the 'Remix 11' miss-pressing.  When it originally mixed it was reported John did not like the version of 'Tomorrow Never knows' so production was stopped and a new one pressed.  All of the genuine first pressings have a 2/1 matrix.

This particular 'Withdrawn' mix is not the best example of its kind but nonetheless the audio ranges between very good and excellent.  The most obvious interference is some static that can be heard mainly on S1, S2 is a lot clearer.

The patents pending cover is in excellent condition with only some minor wear on the top edge.

This first press has 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' and 'Sold In UK Subject...' text on the labels and the 2/1 matrix.  Doctor Robert is printed as Dr. Robert on both the label and the cover and each song title is on its own line.  The G&L cover has a small 'mono' on the front.

 Visual grading

Despite S1 not being the best the vinyl is actually in very good shape with no scratches.  There are some hairlines and a couple of scuff lines but in no way is it wrecked!  The hairlines are superficial in my opinion.  There is not very much spindle wear and no groove wear either so the record has not been overplayed.  The run out grooves and labels are also very clean with no marking.

Play grading

The countdown into 'Taxman' is super clean with no interference and it continues to play very well but with a little static distortion here and there.  It is in the background and is not that intrusive in my opinion, it is not loud!  Harrison's mid solo plays with great clarity and no static at all.  There are no clicks or pops and overall I would say an Ex- grade is about right.

The classic 'Eleanor Rigby' does have a little more static but again there are no clicks or pops.  It is worth pointing out that the music and vocals still come through very clearly but I will grade as VG-

'I'm Only Sleeping' plays with some ubiquitous static but again plays clearly with no clicks, pops or skips.  This is a VG track.

The 'tabla' intro on 'Love You To' is very clean with only minimal 'background' and then plays with VG+ audio.  Yes some static but less than the previous two tracks.

'Here, There And Everywhere' has a little more static and one click and VG- is a fair grade.

'Yellow Submarine' certainly plays with improved clarity.  There is some static but it is very much in the background here.  There are also 3/4 very light ticks but they are non-intrusive.  The sound quality actually improves as the track progresses so I think VG+ is an honest appraisal of the audio.

Of course final tracks often have more inner groove distortion and 'She Said She Said' is no exception.  In saying that it is still eminently playable and there are no clicks or pops and because it is a louder track the static is not as noticeable.  A VG+ finish to the side.

------------------------------------------------------------------

With the intro on 'Good Day Sunshine' you can immediately tell the audio on this side is going to be a lot better!  From the very groove the audio is very impressive and it continues to play very clearly with only minimal and very light intermittent static.  A lot quieter than S2 and totally non-intrusive.  This is Ex+ I am confident in saying.

'And Your Bird Can Sing' has just a little more static but again it is only minor and is very much in the background.  There is no distortion and the depth and power of the audio is very impressive.  This is an Ex version with no clicks or pops.

'For No One' plays very clearly for a relatively quiet track with only very light static in the background.  Perhaps not quite as good as the previous two tracks but it is still an Ex- version although I might be underselling it!

'Dr. Robert' is of a similar standard and grades as Ex- again.  Some light background static.

The intro on 'I Want To Tell You' is very clean with barely any intrusion and it continues to play well with some of the usual light static in the background.  It is worth pointing out that it is on a lower level compared to S1 and this remains a very respectable Ex- version.

'Got To Get You Into My Life' is of the same standard and there are no clicks or pops just some background static again.  However, there is no inner groove distortion which is a rarity.

The 'rejected' mix of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' has a couple of light ticks on the intro and then plays with excellent sound for a final track.  There is no obvious static and the sonic quality is very impressive.  In fact this is one of the strongest 'Remix 11 miss-pressing' that I have heard.  There is no distortion and it plays with great clarity and depth throughout and even the fade out is very clean with only one light tick at the very end.  Perhaps is deserves a higher evaluation but Ex+ is a fair assessment I would say.

In summary this rare pressing does have some interference namely the static which is prevalent on many tracks.  However, there are only a couple of light clicks and there are no pops or skips.  S2 certainly plays with greater clarity - a game of two halves you could say!  The audio could perhaps be improved when played as a mono record although interestingly there is no obvious distortion when played through my stereo system.  Overall not the best 'withdrawn' mix I have sold but of course is a very collectable pressing in its own right.

The Cover

The G & L Patents pending cover is in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear.  The top edge is very clean but it does have one very fine small split in the centre.  The bottom edge has no rubbing or wear and the spine is just as impressive also.  The only corner that has some wear is the one on the bottom right and even then it is only minor, the other three are in superb shape.  The opening edge has only a minimal amount of handling wear.  The laminated front cover is totally unmarked and you can only detect a small number of faint creases and the back cover is also in superb condition.  There is no marking and the flipbacks have barely any staining on the edges and they remain firmly in place.  This would easily be Ex+ but for the small split on the top edge but is a very strong Ex for certain.

The Labels

The yellow/black Parlophone labels have lost none of their original colour and have no marking or writing.  There is some spindle wear although not that much and indle wear and KT tax stamp can be seen on the S2 label.

The Inner Sleeve

The original poly-lined Emitex sleeve has no side splits although the central 'window' does have a couple of very small tears.  It has some of the usual creasing but is very clean with only one faint mark.
