Description
There are no serious defects that I can find. Anything that might be even remotely classified as a defect is highlighted in the pictures, and was present when the item shipped from the manufacturer. The most serious of these is a 3/8" rip in the outer covering on the inside of one of the doors on the bottom, which was clearly put there in the packaging process (pic #9).
The only reasons I'm classifying the cover as "Near-mint" instead of "Mint," is that the latch that fastens the doors has tarnished a little with age (pic #4); it looks like a tiny bit of gold paint may be worn off in two of letters of "The Beatles," on one side, (pic #3); one the size of a pinprick, on the "e" in "The"; and one of perhaps 1/8/" on the capital "B." There are also two slight bubbles on the right hand door that I never noticed before; were there from the manufacturing; and only showed up for me, with close-up, flash photography (pic #4).
I've owned this set since it was new, and it's been standing vertically, occupying the same place on my shelf for nearly three decades, never having been so much as moved a fraction of an inch during that time. (Yes, the shelf is a built-in, and the room hasn't been painted since '86, believe it or not. It's finally getting painted this year, which is a big reason I've decided to move the item.)
I remember taking the set out of the box and looking at it, checking out the booklet, and possibly playing a disc; but I think the truth is, that it's so incredibly awesome that I was compelled to preserve it. For me, it was like owning a '57 Corvette in mint condition, that I was afraid to take out of the garage, for fear of it getting damaged, so I confined my Beatles listening to CD's, which I was transitioning to at that time.
The appearance of the set is that it has never been played, the booklet has no signs of usage. I don't think a cleaner example exists, unless you find one still wrapped in plastic. The blank registration card is included (pic #8 - right side).
When I took it out of the box to photograph it and examine it, I really felt like I needed rubber gloves. Regardless, Disc One showed evidence of having been out of the package, in that the inner sleeve was improperly positioned; the disc itself looked new, and there was the same kind of static when taking it out of the plastic inner sleeve, that you get when you unwrap a new one. The inside of the set even smells new, since it's been opened so few times. I was always fanatic about taking proper care of my records.
I did not examine the other thirteen records nor the GeoDisc beyond looking at the outer packages, because they appear to have never been taken out of the individual covers before, and I wanted to preserve that thrill of virgin unpacking for the next owner. It's possible I looked at the Geodisc when I got it, although I have no recollection of having done so.
