Label/Format: Parlophone – matt surfaces with a very gentle hint of texturing. This the recognised ‘second’ pressing format all details as seen in the pictures. Clearly seen also are the embossed ‘K T’ tax letters, both are pristine.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only relatively light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Beatles albums so often played to destriction, this one appears little used and offers superb mono sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Few standard issue Beatles are rare, they sold in vast numbers, this was no exception. Most early copies were sold in mono, this having the second design labels as seen. Condition is always the main factor – the world’s most popular band, Beatles records were most often heavily played, often to near destruction on the most basic of record players. This example, arguably a more elusive ‘second issue’, from around 1966, appears little used. It looks fantastic and offers very fine dynamic mono sound, the cover and even the inner sleeve are equally impressive as seen. Such examples are less easily found.

Brief Info: The third UK Beatles album with side one songs included for the film of the same name. The American version very different. Thirteen gems and predictably, a huge seller. This copy an impressive UK ‘second issue’ format mono, appearing little played and offering lovely clean sound without the usual degrading many have these days. The cover also lovely, this having the small ‘mono’ text on the front, and now with a promotional inner sleeve. With so many of these vintage classics seen in horrendous condition, this one has clearly been well looked after and survived the mono era well, one to please many, if not most Beatles collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably worthy of the extra (+). A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. The front has the second smaller size ‘mono’ text on the front as seen. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Now including the EMI promotional black and white unlined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Beautifully clean, fresh and attractive with very shiny, clear laminate that has minimal dulling, even viewed under light. A little near the bottom edge from the thick record impression, few will show less overall. There is no lifting and any of the few creases are mostly fine edge hairline types that few can hope to avoid at best, with merely three gentle half moons. The lack of chipping to the edge folds is great news as this cover has a tendency to do this, and being so dark blue, they never look nice if present. Few covers this age will escape less issues than this and in terms of ageing, it has little at all on what is an impressive front. One to hold and enjoy, most bar absolute perfectionists should appreciate this classic Beatles cover. The small mono text ones are more elusive I have found also.

Cover Back: Apart from gentle tone or small stain near the left edge opposite Lennon, any discolouration is little and light, only this small minor mark stops the extra plus. The card hasn’t rubbed or creased, and clearly no writing. All three flipbacks are still quite clean with any yellowing gentle and light, even the laminate end areas. No lifting with minimal burring to their ends, all solid and attractive without the usual grubbiness most seem to acquire. During the 1960s, smoking was particular popular and left its affects on covers like this – well no ugly nicotine staining on this one – it even smells relatively fresh and little aged. A tiny few, mostly fine hairline type creases on the flipback laminate, but how many can hope to avoid these as the barest minimum? Overall this back only gives gentle clues to age and more than compliments the highly attractive front.

Top & Bottom Edges: Smoothly laminated and with no chips or scuffs, the top still very white and both very straight. As stated, the lack of chipping to the deep blue bottom edge is great news and never to be taken for granted.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This storage edge is clean, quite sharp with little real wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and very light indeed as seen viewed end-on. This edge is totally natural, guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the laminate end line on the cover front still easily seen. The exposed card on this front edge has no significant chipping either, any wear bordering on minuscule.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine – very solid and straight with minimal hint of compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. The text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled or cracked laminate. For good measure, this is superbly and perfectly centred as seen in close-up, the white surface still exactly that.

Corners: Fantastic corners with any tip rubs tiny and ultra light, hardly anything. Better than excellent shape retained with no bashes or minimal dink traces.

Cover Summary: A very strong and largely age-defying scarcer second print, all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Generally clean and unusually fresh with no writing, this impressive item should please many, and maybe even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: by 1966 the plainer lined inners were replaced with the promotional inners, these were not lined. This has hardly aged at all with barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing little played, and then with due care, no heavyweight worn stylus have inflicted any penetrating marks on this quality record. Any visual surface marks ultra fine and faint, as viewed critically under bright light. Wispy traces, mostly finer than hairlines, there are no stylus scratches at all, this record plays superbly. Visually a lovely, still very early example that should please many collectors – simply compare to the trashed and worn-out examples that surface regularly.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Beatles third album, and first feature film music plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, very clear and dynamic, warm mono sound. Sound quality is superb with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any hint of sound degrading, this also being played as usual on my LP12 Sondek which is ruthlessly revealing and clinical. Another wonderful production from George Martin – this is how the band and him wanted their records to sound. This is the real thing, no digital enhancements or remastering required, this simply takes you back to when it was first purchased. A typical quality clean pressing with no penetrating stylus scratches or tracking issues*. Clean lesser-used still early issues are harder to find for sure. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and with due care, and has been clearly very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Such clean copies are at more a premium and this gem merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
