Description
It has been 50 years since the release of this ground breaking album, effectively ground zero for a whole new sub genre in rock music; the concept album. Issued in the US in May of 1966, this was the eleventh studio album released by The Beach Boys. It was produced and arranged by Brian Wilson, he also composed most of the music in collaboration with lyricist Tony Asher ("The Sloop John B" was a traditional folk song from the Caribbean arranged for this album by Brian Wilson). The concept in this case being in the production values and techniques, rather than a continuous narrative or linked themes. Every song can stand alone, "God Only Knows/Wouldn't It Be Nice" were released as a 7" single, and "Sloop John B" was also released as a single (the B side "You're So Good to Me" was from the 1965 album Summer Days(And Summer Nights !!)), but when listened to in the context of the album the connection through production and arrangements becomes apparent. Wilson was influenced by Phil Spectre's "Wall of Sound" technique and on this album he has taken that technique to the next level with a more sophisticated layering of sound and a broad pallet of textures and instruments all mixed down with the intention of a final product delivered in mono. (He utilized the often used but rarely credited session musicians known as "the wrecking crew" to help him achieve this). At the time of its release "Pet Sounds" was not a great success for the Beach Boys in the US, peaking at number 10 in the Billboard top 200 albums chart, however it was critically acclaimed in the UK and reached number 2 in the UK top 40 charts, staying in the top ten for six months. The Beatles were influenced by this album and went on to produce their own immensely successful concept album "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" the following year. Over time this album has become recognized for its broad influence on the direction rock music has taken since it was first released, and in 2003 Rolling Stone ranked it number 2 on its list of "500 greatest albums of all time" The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's.." being number 1 and their "Revolver" being number 3 on the list. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, there are some light scuffs from being taken in and out of the cover, but no scratches, skips or jumps. both sides play LOUD and clear, with only some low level surface noise on the run in and run out tracks and between the tracks, and in some of the fade outs masked when the music is playing.(VG) both labels are clean, no stickers or writing. The cover is a bit tired and there are signs of wear from storage. There is obvious ring wear on the front and some light creasing along the spine ,but both sides are clean, no writing or stains. There is a price sticker on the back which is interesting as it is from the period when Australia was undergoing the transition to decimal currency(1966), giving the price in dollars and cents and shillings and pence. (see photo 7)There are no tears or splits but the spine has some creasing, the title and the artist's name are still readable.(G+) THE COVER HAS BOTH STEREO AND MONO CATALOGUE NUMBERS ON IT, BUT THE RECORD HAS THE MONO CATALOGUE NUMBER T2458. THIS IS A MONO PRESSING AND AS SUCH IS THE MIX THAT BRIAN WILSON PRODUCED. STEREO PRESSINGS FROM THE TIME WERE RE CHANNELED, THE FIRST TRUE STEREO MIX WAS MADE IN 1997.
