Label/Format: Capitol – Original rainbow rim format with the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side two. Both these fragile letters are fine and unworn, being delicate, that is seldom the case, many flatten and erode and are seen white. This pair so fresh and undamaged, they may not be that easy to even see. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: ST 1890.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. An impressive weight for any record even from this vintage period.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Although this album sold well, this is much harder to find as an original stereo pressing. Issued way be in 1963, few owned stereo equipment that was still in it’s infancy. Only one in many will be a stereo pressing, this the age of the mono record and a only a smaller percentage sold in the two-channel mode.

Brief Info: The second Beach Boys album and a lovely vintage stereo pressing. An evergreen popular sunshine band during the 1960s, their albums sold well but less so in stereo. This is another gem even with several instrumental tracks. A lovely, little played copy, this will delight most fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on the back via three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents pending’ text. This is a true stereo cover with it’s ST 1890 catalogue number.

Lamination & Front: The front is lovely clean and fresh condition with few blemishes. With laminate very shiny and clear and al fully adhered bar one small blister near the top edge towards the left corner area. As this is situated mainly on a white part of the cover, it shows little and is uncracked or peeled, reitterate too, it’s very small. The surface has only very fine surface marks seen under light and very few creases. Just two small half moons away from the edges and minimal traces of friction rubs or dulling, again any mild amount present near the top and bottom edges is only just seen under light. The laminate ends several millimetres short of the full width on the right edge but the exposed strip shows barely any traces of wear. Overall, this is a superb vinitage front that will take a fair amount of beating.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive and totally defies it’s great age. There is a stamped price of £1-250 near the top right corner – a slightly strange value. The main panel shows little wear at all with minimal darkening or grubbiness with no ring marks or noteworthy creasing. A mild small burr trace on the left edge from a more rustic trim in manufacture, this was made with slightly thicker card than some of time but still mainly neat. The flipbacks are in superb condition with no damage, full adhesion and clean ends. Any end burr traces are minuscule, even on the bottom one and these have barely any even fine hairline surface creases. Both sides look very nice indeed.

Top Edge: Barely any wear at all, an ultra minor faint bend trace near the left corner.

Bottom Edge: Almost as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. As stated a more rustic trim in manufacture with the odd minor thumb burr trace. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: This in super shape and condition: solid, straight, uncompressed with practically all laminate intact, solid and clear. A very small peel near the bottom corner shows little. All text is perfect and unworn, bold and sharp as can be seen on my close-up picture.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and all retain very fine shape or better.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this elusive stereo 60s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: This album came to me inside this vintage tracing-paper lined EMI style inner. A fine inner, slightly aged by minor discolouration, it has one corner crease too. The window and lining is immaculate and there are no edge splits with only lightish creasing near the top opening. There is a small number written in pen near the top right corner ENC 213, so whether this inner is the original or not is uncertain. I cannot verify, only speculate, for sure it’s a very sold inner in this style of course and overall, a nice one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Strong Excellent, no mean grading for a record of this considerable vintage. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on thick vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and only with very light and faint surface marks seen under light. There are no penetrating scratches on this lovely record, most blemishes are very fine hairlines seen with scrutiny under light and have no sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic popular record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. This has not been subjected to unworthy equipment for sure and all evidenct suggests very few plays including those very fresh, little-marked labels. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this delightful, early stereo record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
