THE BEACH BOYS
Smiley Smile
FIRST UK *STEREO* PRESSING (November 1967) ON CAPITOL (ST 9001) OF THE BEACH BOYS' CLASSIC "Smiley Smile" LP - ONE OF THE STRANGEST LPs THE BEACH BOYS EVER RECORDED (WITH MANY EXPERIMENTAL/ZAPPAESQUE TOUCHES) AND ONE WHICH WAS NOT GREETED KINDLY UPON RELEASE BUT HAS SINCE GAINED A REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE KEY ALBUMS OF THE SIXTIES (INDEED, APART FROM "GOOD VIBRATIONS" - WHICH WAS INCLUDED AGAINST BRIAN WILSON'S WISHES - THIS IS AN EXTREMELY NON-COMMERCIAL PIECE OF WORK)
THIS COPY IS A *FACTORY SAMPLE* AND IS STICKERED AS SUCH ON THE SIDE ONE LABEL
IT IS ALSO IN BEAUTIFUL, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION WITH ONLY ONE/TWO LIGHT SPINDLE TRACES ON THE LABELS AND PRISTINE UNMARKED SURFACES - FANTASTIC COPY OF AN OUTSTANDING LP
After "Good Vibrations" topped the singles charts in late 1966, the reported Smile project was eagerly anticipated. However, in May 1967, the album was cancelled, and The Beach Boys pulled out of their headlining spot at the Monterey Pop Festival.
The original project (which took longer to record than any other Beach Boys album) was scrapped. Cut largely at Brian Wilson's new home studio in Bel Air during June and July, the album includes alternate versions of songs originally intended for Smile ("Heroes and Villains", "Wind Chimes", "Vegetables", and "Wonderful") and quickly recorded new material.
Only "Good Vibrations" appears in its original version. "Good Vibrations" was included to help bolster sales, even though Brian was strongly against its inclusion.
When Smiley Smile was finally released in September, after months of hype, its critical reception was unenthusiastic, peaking at only #41 in the US. Its commercial reception a few months later in the UK was better; it reached #9 on British charts. Carl Wilson is reported to have called it "a bunt instead of a grand slam" comparing Smiley Smile to the much-fabled unreleased album that it eventually replaced.
Smiley Smile is generally considered the most controversial Beach Boys album; many fans consider it a massive failure while others consider it among the most distinctive albums of the sixties. Pete Townshend of The Who is a known admirer of the record, as well as Robbie Robertson of The Band.
Smiley Smile marked the beginning of the end of Brian Wilson as the creative leader of The Beach Boys. Although the album was mostly produced by him, the production was for the first time credited to the group.

Side 2: Good Vibrations / With Me Tonight / Wind Chimes / Gettin' Hungry / Wonderful / Whistle In
LABELS: Like-new - clean, bright and unmarked with just a couple of very light spindle traces - this is a beautiful, barely played copy. The FACTORY SAMPLE sticker is untouched with no attempt at removal
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - the record shines like new
VINYL Audio: Superb warm and vibrant sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps and just a few intermittent clicks/pops (nothing continuous and nothing I found at all intrusive on play-grading this masterpiece). The sound quality is superb throughout and the LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion (it's only been played once or twice). Critically graded a strong EXCELLENT+ for audio - this is a great copy
SLEEVE: The G&L patents pending front laminated flipback cover is also in beautiful condition - crisp, sharp, unworn edges and spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) and which displays all text clear and bold. The laminated front has a deep glass-like gloss with just a little record impression and the unlaminated back is clean with no damage to any of the fold over sections - again a strong EXCELLENT+
