THE BEACH BOYS "Smiley Smile" 1967 UK 1st MONO PRESS

G&L FLIPBACK PATENTS PENDING FLIPBACK, EXCELLENT COPY

THE BEACH BOYS
Smiley Smile

ORIGINAL UK CAPITOL (T 9001) FIRST *MONO* PRESSING (November 1967) OF THE BEACH BOYS' CLASSIC "Smiley Smile" LP - ONE OF THEIR MOST EXPERIMENTAL ALBUMS WHICH WAS NOT GREETED AT ALL KINDLY UPON RELEASE BUT HAS SINCE GAINED A REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE KEY ALBUMS OF THE SIXTIES
GOOD VIBRATIONS IS THE ONLY REALLY COMMERCIAL TRACK ON THIS SET (and it was included against Brian Wilson's wishes) THE REST IS VERY EXPERIMENTAL WITH EVEN ZAPPA-ESQUE TOUCHES - GREAT STUFF

After "Good Vibrations" topped the singles charts in late 1966, the reported Smile project was eagerly anticipated.
However, in May 1967, the album was cancelled, and The Beach Boys pulled out of their headlining spot at the Monterey Pop Festival.
The original project (which took longer to record than any other Beach Boys album) was scrapped and Smiley Smile, cut largely at Brian Wilson's new home studio in Bel Air during June and July 1967 includes alternate versions of songs originally intended for Smile ("Heroes and Villains", "Wind Chimes", "Vegetables", and "Wonderful") and quickly recorded new material.
Only "Good Vibrations" appears in its original version. "Good Vibrations" was included to help bolster sales, even though Brian was strongly against its inclusion.
When Smiley Smile was finally released in September, after months of hype, its critical reception was unenthusiastic, peaking at only #41 in the US.
Smiley Smile is generally considered the most controversial Beach Boys album; many fans consider it a massive failure while others consider it among the most distinctive albums of the sixties. Pete Townshend of The Who is a known admirer of the record, as well as Robbie Robertson of The Band.
Smiley Smile marked the beginning of the end of Brian Wilson as the creative leader of The Beach Boys. Although the album was mostly produced by him, the production was for the first time credited to the group.

PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE RAINBOW RIM CAPITOL LABELS WITH "SOLD IN UK...." STATEMENT AND 'KT' TAX CODE EMBOSSED ON SIDE ONE
FIRST ISSUE MARTIX: T1 9001 - 1 / T2 9001 - 1
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 2/GP and 1/GP
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FRONT LAMINATED DUO FLIP-BACK SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patents pending" DATE CODED '6711' (1967, November)

Track Listing:
Side 1: Heroes And Villains / Vegetables / Fall Breaks Back To Winter (W.Woodpecker Symphony) / She's Goin' Bald / Little Pad
Side 2: Good Vibrations / With Me Tonight / Wind Chimes / Gettin' Hungry / Wonderful / Whistle In

LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with barely any spindle traces to be seen - the KT tax code is prominent and unworn - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen with some light marks but none of these have any major audio consequence - EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: Crystal clear, sharp, rich and detailed MONO cut and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listing and this is one of my favourite BB albums) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, just an occasional light click/pop (very, very few) a little surface noise on the run-ins and on some (not all) of the quieter sections (nothing major and nothing I found at all intrusive). The sound quality throughout is very impressive - clear and rich and there is no discernible groove-wear and no distortion. Critically graded EXCELLENT for audio this is a very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The G&L patents pending front laminated cover with two back fold-over sections is also in beautiful condition - crisp, sharp, unworn edges and spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) and which displays all text clear and bold. The laminated front has a deep glass-like gloss and the unlaminated back is clean with no damage to any of the fold over sections - NEAR MINT
