Label Conditions: Both very clean and still attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle markes. Some light handling marks seen under light. Although the record has some light surface marks on side two, these do not sound and the record plays with lovely clean sound.

Brief Info: Always a pleasure to offer one of the greatest albums ever made. Issued in 1966, this masterpiece of popular music peaked at No 2 in the UK album charts and No 10 in the United States. Rated by many critics and the record buying public as one the greatest album ever issued, certainly within the ‘pop music’ genre, this album must rank as Brian Wilson’s greatest ever achievement. Including a host of session musicians, every song on this album works perfectly and has more than stood the test of time, it remains one of the most influencial albums ever made. The tracks have immense beauty and are superbly arranged and produced with magnificently lush orchestral parts and vocal harmonies – this is simply a perfect pop record with Wilson at his creative peak – this his crowning achievement. This copy on offer is a first UK issue mono, arguably easier to find in this mode than the stereo – but condition is always a major factor. Most monos that surface are invariably heavily played and wrecked on basic, heavy-tracking record players of the time. So to find one appearing more lightly played is far less common. As stated further up, side two has a few visual surface marks, but these do not sound. The sound remains impressive – focused, clear and sharp – minimal blemishes and a real joy to play. The cover a little aged, but little more than most would expect from a 50-year-old album, this still looks fine as well. An album of genius and as essential as any record ever could be, most collectors will enjoy this legendary and landmark recording.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): a single format with a laminated front. This covers all the closed edges and ends on three large external rear flipbacks. This is the correct mono cover with the T 2458 number on the back. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and including the ‘Patents pending’ text. This one included a plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: One of the most famous covers of the 1960s. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with very little dulling, a little around the rim area rarely avoided at best. A little crinkle and a small (possible) nail mark near the top right, but minimal overall creasing, bar the usual edge hairline types, also no lifting. The famous graphic looks lovely with deep colour, just enough to gently remind of age, but still a nice looking front overall.

Cover Back: The main unprotected matt back panel has aged a little with some light grubbiness and patch discolouration. Avoiding rubbing, creasing and ring wear however. The three flipbacks are solid and undamaged, their ends quite clean, lacking the usual grubbiness most acquire with minimal end burring. A fine back that does offer more clues of age, but in an acceptable way for many.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, the odd scuff trace or minor mark.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Remaining quite sharp with a little mildish thickening seen viewed end-on. In context, this is very light and few that are left totally natural will have less. Record enters on this edge and it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A fine spine – solid, robust and generally straight with little compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid, smooth laminate. The white surface a little darkened with age as seen.

Corners: Mostly light tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained with no bashes. A little burring above the lower right.

Cover Summary: A fine, and still attractive example of this highly famous, prized and scarce original mono cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Not for purists, but should please many those who do not mind a cover with a little ageing.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic white unlined inner with unsplit edges that have no repairs. Any creasing light, the paper has moderately discoloured with natural age. This includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): side one is more excellent. A very fine visual copy that is impressively clean with fine shine and very heavily pressed. Most marks are very fine and faint, again, as stated, side two has a few more visible surface marks, but these are purely superficial with no audio affect. Few 50-year-old popular classics, especially in mono will survive without a few visual blemishes. Lacking those penetrating stylus scratches and the sound unworn are the most important factors – this copy plays impressively and was a joy to hear again. A copy to please many collectors, but like the cover, not for those who want visual perfection.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This undisputed masterpiece plays even above its pleasing visual grading with very little to fault. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is lovely with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal, light and very infrequent indeed, overall an exceptional clean pressing for a technically complex album that has no tracking issues*. Offering that lovely original sound – no tweaking, digital enhancements or remixing required for what is a perfect production, and the mono mix for many still the definitive way to experience this album. Few available original rainbow format copies will outperform this vintage pressing significantly I feel sure. So many mono copies trashed by careless handling and playing with worn-out or chipped sapphire tipped stylus. No such ruinous usage for this copy, okay, a few light surface marks or gentle paper scuffs, but this has more than survived that perilous period for records. Both channels are clean and sharp being played through a stereo system, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has avoided any significant trauma. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and the fine details and warm detailed will never be bettered by the more ‘modern’ formats. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total perfection is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
