Description

THE BEACH BOYS "HOLLAND" 2016 U.S 2 X LP 200 gram edition of the classic 1973 album by one of America's most creative & enduring groups (Brother/Capitol/Analogue Productions) MS-2118 MINT! Featuring "Sail On Sailor", "California Saga" & all the "Mount Vernon & Fairway (A Fairy Tale)" EP tracks on disc 2.

The Beach Boys reigned as one of America's top groups of the 1960s with 13 Top Ten records including 3 #1 records & the ground breaking "Pet Sounds" LP in 1966. But as the 1970s dawned, their leader Brian Wilson became mentally unstable & withdrew from live appearances. Nevertheless, they severed ties with Capitol, their long-time record company & signed with Warner Brothers Records who gave them their own custom imprint- Brother Records. "Holland" is their 4th album on Brother. Brian still made some worthwhile contributions such as "Add Some Music To Your Day" & the majestic "Surf's Up" but was no longer the dominant figure he had been on "Good Vibrations" & the "Pet Sounds" LP. He wrote "Sail On Sailor" for this LP along with Tandyn Almer (the elusive L.A. songwriter famous for composing "Along Comes Mary" by the Association) & long-time collaborator Van Dyke Parks. It was definitely the high point of the album & its paltry #49 chart placing does not do it justice even though it was released as a single twice & spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Top 100. A second single, Mike Love's “California Saga” stalled at #84 in May, 1973. In addition to Brian Wilson & Mike Love, the group at this time consisted of Carl & Dennis Wilson, Alan Jardine & new recruits Ricky Fataar & Blondie Chaplin who were members of The Flame, a South African band signed to Brother Records. The original "Holland" album contained a bonus 7" EP with 6 inter-related songs by Brian Wilson titled "Mt. Vernon & Fairway". All 6 tracks make their first & only appearance on a 12" record on side 3 of this 2 LP set.  Although it seems incongruous that the quintessential California group should go to Amsterdam to record, the change of scenery actually worked & the Beach Boys created one of their best later period albums.
