Stage Fright, the Band's third album, sounded on its surface like the group's first two releases, Music from Big Pink and The Band, employing the same dense arrangements with their mixture of a deep bottom formed by drummer Levon Helm and bassist Rick Danko, penetrating guitar work by Robbie Robertson, and the varied keyboard work of pianist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson, with Helm, Danko, and Manuel's vocals on top. But the songs this time around were far more personal, and, despite a nominal complacency, quite troubling. Only "All La Glory," Robertson's song about the birth of his daughter, was fully positive. "Strawberry Wine" and "Sleeping" were celebrations of indolence, while "Time to Kill," as its title implied, revealed boredom while claiming romantic contentment. Several of the album's later songs seemed to be metaphors for trouble the group was encountering, with "The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show" commenting on the falseness of show business, "Daniel and the Sacred Harp" worrying about a loss of integrity, and the title song talking about the pitfalls of fortune and fame. "The Shape I'm In" was perhaps the album's most blatant statement of panic. The Band was widely acclaimed after its first two albums; Stage Fright seemed to be the group's alarmed response, which made it their most nakedly confessional. It was certainly different from their previous work, which had tended toward story-songs set in earlier times, but it was hardly less compelling for that.

Unfairly characterized as uneven and inconsistent, the Band's third album is nevertheless on par with their legendary first two albums (Music From The Big Pink / The Band), and contains some of the strongest musicianship and songwriting THE BAND ever executed on record.

The songs on Stage Fright were written in a couple of weeks, whereas the first two albums had been written over a period of months. Originally, the album was put together with the idea in mind that it would be the Band's first "live" album, performed at the Woodstock Playhouse. But the townspeople felt that the place had already been over-publicized because of the Woodstock Festival, so the Band recorded on stage for two and a half weeks with no one there!!!

This album cemented, once for all, the reputation of the world's foremost group of studio musicians the BAND enjoyed with the Rock's founding fathers: It proved to the world at large that Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins and John Hammond,jr. were not crazy when they opted to be backed by THE Band. This is the original 1970 pressing of the album, on the original Capitol lime-green label, and is offered here in a beautiful, pristine condition. Don’t fail to grab this piece of history. (c)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
