Unfairly characterized as uneven and inconsistent, the Band's third album is nevertheless on par with their legendary first two albums (Music From The Big Pink / The Band), and contains some of the strongest musicianship and songwriting THE BAND ever executed on record.

The songs on Stage Fright were written in a couple of weeks, whereas the first two albums had been written over a period of months. Originally, the album was put together with the idea in mind that it would be the Band's first "live" album, performed at the Woodstock Playhouse. But the townspeople felt that the place had already been over-publicized because of the Woodstock Festival, so the Band recorded on stage for two and a half weeks with no one there!!!

This album cemented, once for all, the reputation of the world's foremost group of studio musicians the BAND enjoyed with the Rock's founding fathers: It proved to the world at large that Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins and John Hammond,jr. were not crazy when they opted to be backed by THE Band. This is the original 1970 pressing of the album, on the original Capitol lime-green label, and is offered here in a beautiful, pristine condition. Don’t fail to grab this piece of history. (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with the original wraparound poster still intact. (in a decent shape, with a few wrinkles along the foldings, but otherwise intact)

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Note: what looks like writing on back cover is actually an integral part of the cover artwork: it is a signature of Bob Cato, graphic designer
