Label/Format: Capitol, original yellow format with matt, very gently textured surfaces. As seen, side one has a Factory Sample sticker.

Label Conditions: Both ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. A massively revealing label that shows any marks freely, but this has barely any and come as close to possible of reminding of new. Another from a collection purchased from new by one owner and appearing hardly played.

Brief Info: The fourth The Band album, it was their last one for around four years. Mixed reviews on issue did not help sales and this not sell well. Thus original UK issues are elusive and rarely found in this beautiful condition. This Factory Sample copy appears hardly played and offers beautiful clean sound. The delicate fully textured gatefold cover is also in amazing age-defying condition. Owned from new by one owner who stored this inside a protective cover. For fans and collectors, this will prove beyond difficult to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: an unlaminated, fully textured gatefold format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plan white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A minute bottom right corner tip apart, this front is practically mint as-made. Unworn or aged, even the white border is still clean and fresh with no toning or grubbiness. The surface texturing pattern is immaculate as is the dark graphic. I can see no rubbing or other creases at all, the tip mentioned is almost microscopic.

Cover Back: Stunning again, this ultra wear-prone back is virtually factory-fresh, try finding this better – put simply – it’s mint.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate, looks new again. Both surfaces have those lovely textured surfaces as well.

Top Edges: Straight, clean and unworn again. The front right not quite constructed square being critical, that purely a manufacturing blemish of course.

Bottom Edges: Both unworn and straight. These are still pure white exactly as they were made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely even a trace of thickening. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, wide and straight with hardly any compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together. All text is perfect and unworn, also nicely centred on the very clean white surface.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent to near mint shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A truly amazing all-round example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to match, let alone find better. This beautiful item should please all collectors, indeed this could prove a massive upgrade for fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white polylined inner with the dual patent numbers on one lower left corner. Two immaculate window circles and the lining still quite clear, hardly creased with no edge splits or repairs. A little natural crinkle and the paper darkened near the edges.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything heard at all in fact and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this UK original pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been superbly stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quite elusive record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
