ORIGINAL UK RCA (RD8073) FIRST *MONO* PRESSING (NEVER RELEASED IN STEREO AS FAR AS I AM AWARE) OF THE ARCHIES' "Sugar Sugar" LP WHICH WAS RUSH RELEASED AFTER THE PHENOMENAL SUCCESS OF THE SINGLE WHICH REACHED NUMBER 1 IN THE UK ON 21st OCTOBER 1969 AND REMAINED THERE FOR 8 WEEKS (and was actually one of the first singles I ever bought with my own pocket money)
THE LP HOWEVER, WAS A POOR SELLER AND DIDN'T CHART (not really surprising as the single sold millions and its targeted pre-teen audience were not LP buyers) SO IN CONSEQUENCE THIS ALBUM IS PRETTY RARE TODAY - ESPECIALLY IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION - THIS COPY HAS ONLY BEEN PLAYED THE ONE TIME AND IT DELIVERS PRETTY MUCH FLAWLESS AUDIO THROUGHOUT

Created for mass consumption by bubblegum-pop genius Don Kirshner (the man who gave us the Monkees), The Archies were the ultimate manufactured pop group. They existed only on television as an animated series based on the comic book characters of the same name, voiced by Ron Dante, Toni Wine and Andy Kim, who were later even called upon for touring purposes.
Kirshner was astute enough to employ solid commercial writers of some standing, including Jeff Barry and Andy Kim to write the musical material which is consistently of an extremely high standard
The group released one of the biggest selling singles in the history of RCA Records. Sugar Sugar became a transatlantic number 1, hogging the top spot in Britain for over two months. Back in the USA, where the television series was extremely popular (it was surprisingly never aired in the UK), the group enjoyed another Top 10 hit with Jingle Jangle before suffering the sharp plunge into obscurity common to animated creations.

The Archies' second album, on which "Sugar Sugar" lights up the top of side two, was so quickly rush-released that Debbie Sherwood fails to even mention it in her liner notes.
Even apart from that classic, the Archies' crew -- spearheaded by producer Jeff Barry, singer Ron Dante, and puppet-master Don Kirshner -- rushed out of the gate with 12 ingots of pure pop, tight construction enlivened with supple and spontaneous-sounding harmonies, knowing production tricks ("Melody Hill"'s outer-space jingle bells and "cuckoo, cuckoo" counterpoint), plus a little-appreciated underpinning of soul music. "Inside out-Upside Down"'s call and response flirts with childishness in its glee, but Dante's hearty "pour a little sugar on it baby!" and "put some mustard on my roll" from "Hot Dog" expose the earthy side of this so-called kiddie act. The girl's name in "Feelin' So Good" turns out to be "S.K.O.O.B.Y.-D.O.O."; you suppose Mr. Hanna or Mr. Barbera's ears pricked up?

LABELS: Clean and bright with no unwanted marks/writing and just one spindle trace on each side and the spindle hole is still very tight indicating how little this record has been on a turntable
VINYL Visual: The vinyl retains its original deep, like-new, glossy sheen with just a couple of light marks (these have no real audio consequence)
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality throughout - clean, crisp and sharp sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, barely any clicks/pops (really, hardly any at all) and no surface noise. The LP plays to the highest standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion and is graded a strong NEAR MINT for audio - great copy
SLEEVE: The front laminated sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition. The front surface has a beautiful deep glossy sheen with no real rubbing, just a little record impression and a few light creases and the unlaminated back is pretty clean with just a shallow central score mark (please see close-up photo). The edges are sharp with no real wear and the spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) displays all text clear and bold - very nice example
