Label/Format: Original Atlantic red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt, smooth surfaces. This one has the two labels transposed as noted above, although not common, I have seen and had this error before, clearly a tiny number did not allow for the correct backing of side one with side four, as some double sets did at the time. This is NOT a mispressing in any form, simply, the factory put the wrong label on each record.

Label Conditions: Four lovely original UK labels: clean, still fresh and attractive with any spindle marks tiny, very few and equally fine and faint. The only issue, the very careful owner put an initial on two of them, being this neat, I have no issues whatsoever with it - stating the obvious, is has no affect on the stunning sound all four sides offer.

Cat Number: 2402035/6 [set number 2659-005].

Country of Manufacture: RECORDS & INNERS: England / COVER: US. The very early British ‘Plum’ records very often included the imported American Capricorn cover. That was not unusual for the time for American artists and bands that were initially less-known in the UK.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of these Records: 138 / 125 grams. Very scarce: this a very late album to be made with the Atlantic ‘Plum’ labels, thus some are seen with Kinney stickers as well. The relative failure of this album in the UK has to be a real surprise, take into consideration this has to be arguably one of the very best live albums of all time, if not THE best. A massive guitar-fest of the highest possible quailty. This somewhat ‘lost’ plum vinyl classic is more loved and desirable than ever before and justifiably so. The cover on this album is incredibly hard to find in decent conditions – that is both US and UK versions that still have the same main graphics (the Cat. No. apart) – this is one of the best America covers I have seen, and the records are both fantastic and play with little short of pristine sound. Four impressive ‘Plum’ labels and the best sound possible. One of the classics and being there must have been awe-inspiring – this is probably as close as it ever gets these days.

Original Year of Release: 1971, right on the fringe of the transition period to the new Kinney labels.

Matrix Nos: 2402035 A // 1 1 2 1 & 2402035 B // 1 1 1 1 & 2402036 A // 2 1 1 2 & 2402036 B // 1 1 1 2. I stated again: two labels are shown on the wrong side, this fairly unusual, but I have seen before. Also some small error corrections on the matrix details.

Musicians: Duane Allman – lead guitar, slide guitar; Gregg Allman – organ, piano, vocals; Dickey Betts – lead guitar, vocals; Berry Oakley – bass guitar; Jai Johanny Johanson – drums, congas, timbales; Butch Trucks – drums, tympani.

Album Information: The band’s third album and this must have raised a few eyebrows for the few who bought it back in the early 1970s. Without doubt one of the greatest live documents of the rock era. This supreme double set captures one of the tightest bands ever, featuring their original line-up before Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were cruelly lost. Beautiful melodic lengthy workouts with blistering dual guitars and drummers and of course featuring Duane’s superb blues vocals. This is a guitar tour de force and listening to this again just makes you wonder where all the guitar heroes have gone these days. Fillmore did not chart in the UK but sold well in the US peaking at 13. UK copies are never easily found as originals and this copy on offer is on the highly collectable original Atlantic ‘Plum’ format. Whatever cover version holds a ‘Plum’ copy – American or British, it was never laminated and being predominately black will usually be found heavily worn. Double set gatefolds simply attract rubbing and ring wear, especially the darker ones. Both records sound magnificent, it’s a copy that will thrill collectors, play this loud and enjoy one of the most breathtaking live albums ever put to record – put this on a worthy system, and this is as close to being there you will ever experience these days. The power riff on ‘Whipping Post’ has to be one of the greatest ever.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: US covers are prone to splitting and double sets will acquire ring wear in most cases. The more flimsy UK version is arguably more prone still.

Cover Condition and Details: NEAR EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical as I feel this looks a great deal better. An unlaminated gatefold format with a smooth finish and a semi-shiny varnished type finish on the outside faces. The inside has the paste-on panel style with a textured matt finish. Printed and made in the US with Capricorn credits.

Cover Front: Clean and still fresh and attractive. In terms of surface wear, very little, a light traces of a removed sticker near the top edge just right of centre. Hardly any creasing, a few light surface marks and light dulling traces seen under angled light, but this fragile and quite ungiving cover front is still attractive and far less wear than most I have seen.

Cover Back: Very similar again with just a little fine and gentle edge rubbing, the lack of ring wear either side is a major positive.

Cover Gatefold Inner: The inside is practically as made.

Top Edges: Light to moderate, slightly patchy rubbing, no splits, no repairs and both straight.

Bottom Edges: The paler grey bottom edges have worn better with some rubbing, but less than above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are clean and sharp with any thickening or burring minimal. Also seen viewed end-on, is just how thick this card is, probably double the thickness of the UK version.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight and folded very close to square with minimal compression. Most of the text is strong and present with just the odd small clip. With close inspection, not ruling out the odd tiny black tip-in or two. The folds have the odd small rub, but way better than most seen, they also remain very strong and solid.

Corners: Moderate corner tip rubbing, double gatefolds always the most vulnerable for this, less on the spine ends. Fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: Not perfect, but one of the best US-made examples I have had with two superb UK Atlantic ‘Plum’ records inside. The main areas are attractive and lack the usual wear seen on both versions. It should please many collectors – and I know for sure, both records will.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR or AROUND EXCELLENT: the Polydor UK polylined inners both have the date codes 0571 (May 1971). Both a little aged, one darkened a little more than the other. Four neat untorn window circles and both the clear linings intact. Some corner creasing but no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: all four surfaces are very clean with fine shine and solidly / very solidly pressed. Very fine and mostly whispy surface marks are seen under bright angled light, most even finer than hairlines, there are NO penetrating scratches to any side. Dry cloth cleaning is the usual culprit for these super-fine surface blemishes that have NO affect on the wonderful sound at all. These two Plum label records should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent double set plays even above it’s very fine visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I feel confident enough to say all four sides play to nigh-on perfection with nothing unwanted. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear and no pops or clicks were noted. Beautifully pressed with no surface or pressing sounds, this set is a class act – as were the band themselves. This guitar festival is stunning, a phenominal recording, well produced too, not all early 1970s live albums were; but this is a true exception. Play this as loud as you can and you could almost be at The Fillmore, this legendary venue and concert must have been awe inspiring. Both channels are clean and focused, all frequencies sharp which is vitally important for those loud electric guitars which go into overdrive and frenzy on many occasions – this is a blistering album that will send shivers down the spine – just listen to that magnificent riff on ‘Whipping Post’ – this never fails to give me that fare ‘tingle factor’ that only the most sublime music and sound ever can. I feel certain this set has been played very modestly, and generally wtih care on a quality system. As stated, the very fine surface marks seen with close-up scrutiny, almost certainly from dry cloth cleaning as most did in the day. Two 43-year-old records that still offer the most impressive sound possibly available for this legendary set. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this awesome double album, this is pure captivating brilliance of the highest order. This ‘Plum’ pair will prove very difficult to find better and the sound should delight even the most discerning audio purist. This legendary concert and set can be strongly recommended and wonderful piece of live rock history.

End Piece: One of the definitive live albums ever, with perfect performances from this outstanding, original American band. Always highly regarded by critics and always featuring highly in any ‘Best Albums of all Time Lists’ and justifiably so. Side fours ‘Whippin Post’, clocking in at 22.40 has to be one of the most awesome tracks ever put to vinyl, it’s a groundbreaking tour de force and remains one of rock’s most inspired and definitive improvised performances, and there is not a second of filler material on this album. With so genuinely few classic rock guitarists around these days bar the older original guys who survived, sit back and enjoy this guitar-feast of pure brilliance – DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
