Label/Format: Deram – far lesser-seen brown label mono version with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks moderate number, but relatively fine and mostly seen when tilted to light. Being a late mono album, most who bought it did so to play on a mono record player, but this copy will plays with impressive clean sound with very little to fault – indeed if that were not the case, I would offer it.

Brief Info: The band’s fourth album and for me, one of their best. Their second release of 1969 and it includes a version of the famous song ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’ with some very ‘alternative’ lyrics that would raise many an eyebrow if issued today – and being honest I feel they would be banned. It includes their strongest band line-up and features the brilliant guitar of Alvin Lee, one of the fastest players ever, now sadly gone. This is a rarer late mono copy, the first I have had, the record plays great, the cover also in fine condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a gatefold format with Clarifoil laminate on the front and back, the inside matt with the laminate ends seen inside the top edges. It has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back and includes the deep red shade inner sleeve to denote this is a mono copy. Printed and made in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains fine shine with a little mild dulling seen under light in places. Still quite fresh looking and clear with little lifting – a couple near left front corner and bottom of the right edge. A few light surface marks and some fine half moon and edge creases, none heavy at all. Some rubbing/scuffing to the bottom right corner tips, but all others exceptionally neat. The rear peep-hole undamaged as seen and both graphics look impressive with deep colour. So both sides gently remind of age, but still quite impressive nonetheless.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very slight pull traces near the top laminate end on the left – in terms of this, very light indeed and few seem to avoid it to some degree. A small rub on the bottom left corner tip and light semi-creasing near the central fold. Covers with thicker spines in this format naturally get this to some degree as well.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both pairs show hardly any wear at all and still straight with full laminate coverage that remains smooth to the fingertip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Any thickening or burring little and quite light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: The spine is exceptional with barely any wear at all. Solid and robust, straight with barely any compression. Folded square so the edges are flush and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under solid, clear and still shiny laminate, this also ultra smooth to the fingertip with hardly any hint of cracking at all.

Corners: Small tip rubs to the right, moderate on the lower ones as mentioned already. Excellent shape mostly retained, less so on bottom right pair, but no significant knocks.

Cover Summary: A fine all-round example of this very colourful late 1960’s cover, one that could prove quite difficult to find much better, especially with a mono record inside. This still attractive item should please many collectors, but not the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++): the deep red shade ‘mono’ polylined Decca style inner is in fine condition, but has creasing to the lower corners. A little rubbing to the lower areas but all edges unsplit with no repairs. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining still very clear with minimal crinkle. British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. An important feature for this era of Decca covers as they fill the main cover peep-hole to denote if a mono or stereo copy is inside.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with only gentle and fine surface marks seen under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus marks and this copy plays with clean impressive mono sound. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine very solidly pressed on quality Decca/Deram vinyl. A copy certainly played several times, but generally with care and avoiding any stylus mishaps or damaging scratches. Visually a rarer late mono record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage brown label copy plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal and faint with no tracking issues*, the odd sporadic tick being immensely difficult to avoid totally, but little on this one. Few examples will outperform this more elusive mono pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and Deram vinyl always the most durable and tough, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
