Personnel: Buck Clayton, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Freddie Greene, Walter Page, Jo Jones, Billie Holiday

 

The Music: This record contains 2 celebrated WILSON-HOLIDAY-YOUNG collaborations. Teddy and Benny share the first chorus of He Ain’t Got Rhythm, followed by Billie’s chorus, then 16 bars from Lester’s tenor which leave the melody far behind, and bear repeated listening, before Buck winds it all up. A very nice side, but the even better one is This Year’s Kisses. Teddy’s intro is followed by a chorus from Lester, with a tender and exemplary statement of the theme. Billie’s chorus reflects this mood: where she had been a bit harsh and edgy on s1, here she is tuneful, soft and wistful.

 

Scarcity Rating: Mint copies of the Wilson-Holiday-Young sides are scarce and strongly sought after.

 

Condition: E++/E+ . Side 2 has a feint scratch and a small mark, both inaudible. Original Brunswick paper sleeve.

 

N.B. Regardless of what you may have read or heard elsewhere, ALL Teddy Wilson Brunswicks require for best results a broad stylus, specifically .0040.
