Teddy Pendergrass’ third studio album Teddy was released in 1979 and came on the heels of two albums that both went platinum. Teddy Pendergrass was the biggest star on his label, Philadelphia International Records, and once again he delivered a smash. Known for his emotional vocal delivery and his passionate singing, Teddy followed a proven path on Teddy and his millions of female listeners bought his albums and flocked to his concerts. The first side of the album is all ballads but Teddy’s target audience loves a good ballad and no one could deliver them like Teddy. “Come Go With Me” and “Turn Off The Lights” both became major R&B hits and both are grand R&B ballads, Teddy style. “I’ll Never See Heaven Again” and “All I Need Is You” are further numbers meant to melt ladies' hearts but Teddy’s always flawless vocals makes these songs a worthy listen.

Side Two is the party side and “If You Know Like I Know” kicks things off in style. A passionate and raw R&B foot stomper, the song was a major club hit and received plenty of airplay in the clubs. The sexy “Do Me” follows a similar path but is more funky. Remember that the year is 1979 and Disco was still the dominant music on radio and “Do Me” got airplay in the discotheques as well as on stations that played dance music. “Set Me Free” is the album showpiece and should have been released as a single. The song had smash written all over it and could have fit into any format in 1979. The song’s rock overtones may have hurt its chances on R&B stations, which is a shame since Teddy is at his raw passionate best here. Album closer “Life Is A Circle” is a product of its’ time but it is a disco song with a positive message.

This album does not disappoint. Highly recommended.
