Trackability: This record is IMMENSELY DIFFICULT to track and only equipment of the highest calibre has any chance to play the salvo of real cannons towards the climax of the 1812. This is not a warning to be taken lightly and is not hype. It's a plain fact, the grooves on the ignition cracks on the cannons are spectacular to view (please see my close-up picture) and are as close to impossible to track as anything engineered or cut to a vinyl record. I will NOT refund anyone if their equipment is not up to the job, I have made it more than clear this is a vinyl obstacle-course and if you have doubts about the capabilities of your turntable, do not bid.

SERIOUS WARNING & DETAILS: This is NO ordinary record, but an extraordinary recording of possibly the world’s most famous overture. This IS without doubt the most challenging record for audio equipment ever manufactured and this is no joke. Firstly, this astonishing recording uses real cannons and bells. The giant bells of the Emery Memorial Carillon in Mariemont, Ohio that are housed in the 100 foot tower were recorded by the Telarc sound crew to recreate the sounds envisaged by Tchaikovsky. The cannons used to recreate the authentic intended original performance were 19th-century guns. Twenty four shots were exploded using different sized charges and 16 used on this recording. One such explosion actually removed the lower level glass from a college several hundred feet away. For the technically minded, the initial crack of the cannon on ignition of the charge lies in the 2,000 to 3,000 KHz region. The follow-up boom goes all the way down to 6 cycles which presented a near impossible task for engineers to capture, master and cut to a long-playing record. This process was achieved however, but at a cost. This record, on the cannons sequence has the most incredible groove patterns you will ever see. It presents a challenge of near impossible demands on all parts of a high fidelity sound system. This is NOT hype, it’s a plain fact. These grooves are so jagged, wide and complex only the highest quality cartridges and tone-arms will have any chance of playing this record. (please see my close up picture of the actual record). The sonic force of these guns can actually damage amplifiers and mosts of all, the speakers. I bought a copy of this record in the early 80s purely based on curiousity after reading a review in a hi-fi magazine. I then owned an LP12/Ittok with an Ortofon moving coil cartridge (model No. escapes me now). Naim 250s bi-amped into a pair of Celestion Ditton 44 speakers. These speakers were three-way rock speciality units with a large 12 inch bass driver. I played this record at some considerable volume, and watching those drivers lurch forward on the cannon-blasts was something I shall never forget. Just watch the stylus struggle to just keep in contact with the grooves is also incredible. The tonearm rocks and shudders as the near impossible shape of these grooves is tracked (well hopefully). Lesser systems have NO chance of playing the finale of this record and only owner’s of high quality systems need bid on this. My current Ortofon struggled but just about kept in contact, and this too with the same LP12/Ittok combination. There is no greater challenge for tracking ability than this. Please look at my macro close-up of a small section of the cannon-area grooves, have you ever seen anything like this before? No other records I have seen playing ‘normal’ information have even come close to these. A real minefield and maze of near impossible to track grooves that carrying that incredible sound information as those guns explode through the system. It’s not just the spectacular finale that sounds breathtaking on this record however. The full force of the orchestra is heard to the maximum also, and actually brings them into the living room. The slam and sonic impact of the players has to be heard to be believed, this is audiophile nirvana. An almost legendary record in terms of high fidelity reproduction but I state again, and this has to be made VERY clear: This Record is the Ultimate System Challenge. It will NOT play on budget or even average turntables, the arm will skip grooves, jump or stick. Only the most refined, highly engineered tonearms and the finest of stylii will have any chance of tracking this record’s finale. Again, this is NOT hype, its a plain FACT. If you have the equipment, be prepared to be blown-away literally. Smaller speakers can actually be damaged, or written off totally – FACT. So these are plain and clear warnings to any potential bidder. If you have doubts, do not bid. This is NO ordinary recording or record. It’s 19th-century cannons, huge bells and a full orchestra in your living room and this fully ‘live’ experience has possibly never been matched or tried again quite on this scale. Only Telarc would dare try and at a huge cost to produce and manufacture too. I remember this record cost me nearly half a weeks wages back then. Hopefuly you have read this, you now decide if your system is up to the ultimate challenge, you have been warned.

Brief Info: One of the most spectacular and well-known pieces of classical music ever written. It will never be heard with more stunning realism and impact than this – as long as the owner’s sound system is up to it – this recording goes beyond ‘Hi-Fi’ and only the very best will cope. The other two pieces are equally as stunning minus the cannons, the incredibly levels of sound is included on the whole album. This has clearly hardly been played, possibly the original owner’s system failed to copy, it would not surprise me in the least. My current turntable set-up new has an approximate value of £3000, and it only just managed to play this. The main emphasis is on the fineness of the stylus and mass of the cartridge itself. The trackability will be tested to the ultimate as will the bearings of the tonearm. The cover has blemishes but nothing major, the emphasis must lie on the record in this case.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) (the main front and back nearer EX++). A gatefold format with the front being laminated. Printed and made in Germany. Includes a Japanese-style OBI strip outlining the complexity and challenge that lies inside.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both front and back have little to fault. Clear solid laminate with no lifting. One crease on the front near the bottom right edge but few others of any real note. Retains fine shine and the cover artwork are real lead solidiers made from the period of this famous overture.

Cover Inner Gatefold: There are some tone spots near the bottom areas of both sides. Hardly major and most quite light but present nonetheless. Little else to fault those apart.

Top Edges: The middle of the back has a ‘transit’ split which I have repaired, the main reason for the downgrade on this cover.

Bottom Edges: Slight compression but little wear other than this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The top has a moderate chip but little else to fault. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Most of the text present and unworn bar the composer’s name which has chipped near the top.

Corners: All quite neat and retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A splendidly attractive cover with the main parts looking really lovely. A few blemishes yes, so not for the connoisseur collector, but I feel the record is the most important part of this set.

The OBI: This had clearly been torn and now taped together to again form the band. That apart, little else to fault. The picture is a X35 shot of the complex cannon grooves, but I think my picture gives a far better indication of what to expect.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy probably played once or twice only (I cannot think why?) Visually, the most amazing looking record you will ever seen. Only a super-fi test record will even come close to these spectacular and complex grooves patterns. The B-side on its own would look amazing enough, but when you look at the A-side, well this really is the ultimate challenge. A super impressive looking minefield of difficulty for any worthy system. This should please all collectors, but will possibly frustrate many too. AGAIN: If you truly feel your turntable is not up to this recording, do not bid (or be prepared to upgrade).

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This, possibly the world’s most difficult to play record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault (subject to individual turntable specification and tracking ability – I think you have the message by now). Massively powerful, distortion-free sound (subject to amp and speaker capability), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is off-the-scale with a massive dynamic range and explosive sound. This takes sound levels to new heights and will rattle the foundations on the larger systems. Remember neighbours when playing this record, because they may think there has been an earthquake or a gas explosion, it really could happen. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this extraordinary record, just watch that stylus dance and shutter in those impossibly difficult grooves. This actual record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is highly and strongly recommended. IF YOU HAVE DOUBTS, PLEASE DO NOT BID. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
