TAV FALCO'S PANTHER BURNS

TAV FALCO, L X CHILTON, JIM DUCKWORTH, RON MILLER

Came to prominence in the early '80s, fusing rockabilly with garage band sloppiness and Elvis Presley-influenced whoops. The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps, one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly (though his version of the sound lacked the campy horror movie ambience others brought to it), and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade. In 1979, Falco put together the first version of his band the Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its early incarnations. In 1981, Falco recorded his first album, Behind the Magnolia Curtain, which also included performances by Othar Turner & His Fife and Drum Band. The album won favorable critical notices

SLEEVE EX but (please, see pictures and read above description)

Behind the Magnolia Curtain was recorded at Memphis' Ardent Studios, and issued by Rough Trade in 1981.he music, simultaneously drenched in and made in reaction to Memphis music history is equal parts primal, early rock & roll, deviant Delta-style blues, and avant-garde art -- played without cynicism. In these songs, completely off-the-rails psychobilly, blues, tangos, wrecked '40s-era tunes, and more often co-exist in the same moment. The sound is dense, the time is elastic (if you're looking for a constant rhythm, forget it). This is ramshackle, raw, unholy, and utterly amazing; a timeless classic. It took the band a tad over six hours to record, and you can hear that. It sounds like swampy scraped mud, but somehow Falco's acoustic guitar comes through. The songs are all covers.  Behind the Magnolia Curtain is one of the great recordings to emerge from the post-punk era and remains the essential Panther Burns document...(AllMusic)
