Review by Richie Unterberger Tangela Tricoli became the top-ranked woman pilot for American Airlines, as well as accumulating college degrees and a doctorate in various fields. You would never assume such levels of real-life accomplishment from a listen, which is very much the work of a lo-fi "outsider" artist, the kind many would assume to have a few marbles missing. For these are goofy ditties about stinky poodles, the "Life of a Housewife," the "City of Angels," the supermarket, and a message to a "Space Woman," all sung in a wavering voice that drifts between keys just as often as her lyrics drift woozily between topics. The production and the eerily echoing vocals bring to mind a woman singing in a bare room into a single mike, mostly relying on her own extremely limited folky acoustic guitar chording, though there's a bit of piano and synthesizer too (and, at the end of "Jet Lady," a cacophony of outer-space-like crossfire generated by a tabla). Is it, dare we say, bad, by the standards of most listeners (and record reviewers)? Well yes, doggone it. The zigzagging melodies aren't catchy, the words and subjects are off the wall but not really funny, and the singing makes Marion Davies sound like Marian Anderson. Will it be enjoyed by outsider music enthusiasts? Probably -- it's deranged (in a very benign manner) and sounds like little to nothing else, though that makes it more of a novelty than a work of art. In 1982, Hollywood native Tangela Tricoli felt divine inspiration to record an album’s worth of offbeat original songs. Two decades later, Jet Lady has become a bona fide music pillar in the pantheon of Outsider music and a highly coveted desert island disc for those sailing the eighth sea. Musically, Tangela’s growing reputation among Outsider aficionados is in the ozone with Lucia Pamela, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and the Shaggs. Paradoxically this left/right brain individual is also the top ranked female pilot for the world’s largest airline and the first woman to be licensed to fly a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. Tangela has also improved Einstein’s Theory of Relativity (!) and a treatise explaining the details is forthcoming. Her song "Stinky Poodle" inspired a recent “Zippy the Pinhead” comic strip. Some even contend that her offbeat persona has provided inspiration for Lisa Kudrow’s character, Phoebe, in the TV sitcom “Friends” and the song “Smelly Cat” is derivative of Tangela’s tune. That claim is credible since she produced a surreal syndicated talk show that ran in Los Angeles for 4 years in the early ’80s. The lovely outsider with the brain that fires on all engines, Tangela has masters degrees in Political Science & Public Administration, a doctorate in Aerospace Safety, paints pictures of herself in the nude, was offered an astronaut job by NASA, hosted a Los Angeles cable talk show featuring her pet poodles, & was the first woman liscenced to pilot a 747. Somewhere between ditzy and effervescent, her whimsical acoustic guitar songs (especially the instaclassic 'Stinky Poodle') will charm the coldest heart.
