Remember the first time you heard the trippy spiralled chords of 'It's Not meant To Be'? So far as opening tracks on an album go, it's up there with some of this century's best, gradually expanding into a kaleidoscope of harmonies before the strange, glassy-eyed voice of Kevin Parker glides in on a cloud. As defining of a particularly hazy period in indie as it is rooted in the aural legacy of 1960s counterculture, in the roaring 2020s it's feels like a wonderfully welcome, decidedly escapist listen.
Of course we probably don't need to tell many people that - Innerspeaker was a certifiable gold record that catapulted Parker to global stardom while still standing out as a work of great vision and artistic credibility. Yes, it owes much to the jangle and psychedelia of rock 'n' roll during the Swinging years, but it doesn't take long to realise how much else is happening here.
