Label/Format: Fly – original ‘Fly’ format on side one, and the beautiful customised T. Rex. label on two. These have a matt, smooth finish.

Label Conditions / Overview: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive. Spindle marks on side one are at least moderate, but less on the picture side. It has a few visible surface marks, but barely any sound, and under light numerous very fine, more wispy surface marks that are totally superficial – possibly from dry-cloth cleaning. However this record which is clean and attractive plays with impressive sound with very little unwanted at all – that never to be taken for granted as many of these were bought by younger music lovers of the time and played on the most basic of equipment. Hence many that surface these days are trashed and unlistenable. Also this copy includes a very impressive stickered cover, neat inner sleeve – and the piece-de-resistance – an immaculate UNMOUNTED practically Mint poster.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 163 grams. A massive weight for this standard issue record. Deeper grooves, so any visual surface blemishes or marks are practically ignored. I have never held a copy of this album with such weight before.

Rarity: Getting rare as a complete first issue. All elements of this album are hard to find in decent conditions and many examples seen are trashed with heavy/careless usage or have parts missing or badly damaged. Most elements of this copy are nice, and again, the record plays very impressively even though it appears played a number of times. Great cover, fine inner and stunning poster. The latter is immensely hard to find now, and this poster I can state will never be found better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Bolan, Finn, Currie and Legend at the start of their glam-rock popularity, they could do little wrong at this time and Electric Warrior is arguably their greatest album ever. Now regarded as a genuine ‘classic’, this album sold well and reached No 1 in the album charts. His almost nonsense lyrics never sounded better, Bolan made them sound like poetry. Including two major hit singles in ‘Jeepster’ and ‘Get it On’, this could not fail, and didn’t. This, along with Ziggy-era Bowie was British glam-rock at it’s very best. Backing vocals are provided by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, then members of Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. An album getting increasingly difficult to find in any form, the early originals with the stickered cover, inner sleeve and poster especially so. Many were bought by teenagers of the time and they got played into submission and mostly on very basic record players. This cover invariably ages badly and is seldom seen much above very good, and often far worse. The beautiful graphic inner sleeve intact and attractive, if gently aged. The giant poster included with this copy is simply magnificent – it appears hardly even touched or unfolded. As seen in my unfolded, and folded pictures, the creases are as deep and crisp as when manufactured. I actually wonder if the owner even bothered to look at it – so many were wall-mounted, torn down, torn and damaged, and often disgarded altogether. So few of these surface in pristine condition as this. Finally and most importantly, the record plays very well indeed with very little to fault. Yes it has mostly very fine surface marks and has been played several times, but the sound is hardly degraded at all with any crackle or ticks minimal and hardly any. Do not underestimate how challenging this rarity is to find like this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the quite rare early sticker on the front (as clearly seen in close-up) to promote the poster. This was fairly quickly omitted from later copies and many owners would have removed it when purchased. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. The poster and inner sleeve are both included.

Cover Front: No exaggeration to state – this cover is VERY hard to find without often significant and heavy wear. Black and gold ink and unprotected with a thick, heavyweight record inside is a sure-fire recipe for ring wear and rubbing. Well this front has somewhat bucked-the-trend and looks very impressive indeed – indeed, this is one of the very best fronts I have seen on this album. Clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any hint of rubbing, only ultra fine and faint edge creasing, being mostly finer than hairlines, these hardly even show on what is a ruthlessly revealing surface. The gold outlined graphic of Bolan and the text is immaculate and totally unworn. The same largely for the large sticker, never removed or picked at, any hint of grubbiness to this only seen point-blank. This is a front to hold, view and enjoy to the near maximum, few will better this I feel sure – with most seen in terrible states, this is a beauty and could prove a major upgrade for many.

Cover Back: Overall, the back is largely the same again, the lack of ring wear to this side, and the front as well, is rarely to see. The only gentle, light blemish is a faint mark or rub trace just below the ‘W’ in ‘WARRIOR’ near the top on the opening text lyrics to ‘Get it On’. Possibly a faint sticker residue trace, but minor and very little harm done. This small blemish apart, this back could again be one of the finest you will see.

Top Edge: Straight with minimal traces of rubbing, this is quite thin so also delicate.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same again, maybe with just a hint more rubbing, but hardly anything on a vulnerable storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and impressively sharp with little wear or thickening and guaranteed untrimmed. Indeed the trim in manufacture is not dead flush, the front edge slightly wider than the back to emphasise the fact. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Another perilous area of this unforgiving cover. This is also impressive in context, solid, straight with any compression quite gentle, the ends are nipped in manufacture. Most of any rubbing near the very ends but very little and again light. Against the odds, the delicate gold text is fully intact and very well centred. Gold text on spines has little chance of remaining unrubbed, eroded, faded or worn away – but this is completely visible and unworn – quite possibly the finest for me to date in this respect. Even the folds have avoided rubs or scuffs making the appearance even more attractive.

Corners: A little above light tip rubs that few can hope to avoid, very fine to excellent shape retained without bashes or noteworthy dinks. Again, few will have less wear on these revealing areas.

Cover Summary: Even with the minor back blemish (and it really is light and small), this is still an exceptional example of a cover that almost wears by looking at it. The inclusion of the scarce and attractive sticker a major plus, as is the general lack of rubbing, creasing and ring wear. Genuinely fresh and attractive, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlined and fragile inner and superbly illustrated with pictures of Bolan and Finn. These do not wear well either – indeed most found have wide splits, often on all edges and in tatters or torn. The bottom edge on this had a smallish, clean central split which I have very neatly repaired to stop it widening in the future, it hardly even shows. With a 160+ gram record inside, this can be no real surprise, all other edges fully intact. This still looks attractive with only fairly gentle darkening of the thin paper. Any creasing gentle and light with no hard large folds at all, also no writing. Just enough to politely remind of age, but again, these are never easy to find much better and my grading arguably over-cautious.

The Poster: MINT: I am not going to lessen this grade for a poster that looks, and even feels like brand new. A large matt poster, that is made with thick paper that has a watermark visible when held to light. A remarkable example that will never be beaten, or even likely matched these days. Unmounted (e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks), even the back is pure white and totally unaged or toned. All edges crisp with no tears or thickened, all folds strong with original ‘spring’. I doubt if this has hardly been unfolded, handled, or even removed from the cover – there are no creases and barely even a crinkle hint. An ultimate poster upgrade for any collector needing one – this is scarce in any condition – a Mint example goes way beyond rare these days.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: with a few more visible surface marks and very fine wispy types seen more closely under light. But there are hardly any penetrating scratches, on this very thick heavyweight record, these visual blemishes have barely any audio affect. In fact the record plays very well indeed. Again, many are unlistenable these days, but this gave a pleasing clean performance with very little unwanted. Clean with impressive shine and heavily pressed on quality robust vinyl – but some mostly fine marks. So not for the visual purist, but the audio quality exceeds the visual grading, and that for me is the most important factor bar none.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic T. Rex album plays at least a full grade, and most even better than the very good visual grading with very little to fault. As stated, the marks are mostly superficial and non-sounding, the deep grooves on this very heavy pressing will help of course. This offers strong, dynamic and warm sound with high audio quality, it has a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any unwanted sound minimal and faint, hardly any noted. A couple of three very faint ticks, but how many originals will not have minor audio blemishes at very best? With most that surface worn or even close to trashed, this is a very fine example that I enjoyed immensely on play-grade. As stated above, the fact so many of these were initially bought by school-children and young teenagers of the day and played on very basic record players, it is hardly surprising many are found wrecked and unlistenable. Such machines usually tracked with huge force rendering groove wear and damage. The sound remains almost fully intact, focused and clear, the detail and music presentation from an original pressing is still the definitive way to enjoy this classic. I remind too, I play my records on one of the world’s most sensitive and respected turntables, so little escapes it’s clinical reproduction. So not a perfect record visually, but any degrading to sound minimal, not for perfectionists, but many collectors will enjoy it – this record merits high recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
