Description
- Artist & Title: Sun Ra – Jazz By Sun Ra Vol. 1
- Label & Cat #: 1957 Transition – trlp 10 *Original 1957 pressing *Matrix Info A & B: TRLP10A CR / 5N : TRLP10B CR / 5N
- Vinyl Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) play graded *very few instances of surface noise intrusion on this rare LP, with the majority of album playing Excellent. There were approximately 10 consecutive seconds of subdued light ticks on "Brainville" and several on "Future." The vinyl itself is clean with a nice shiny gloss and few surface marks. Although I'm trying to highlight any blemishes, overall this is an incredible copy playing strong & clear!
- Cover Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) *laminated with all seams intact and very limited wear; there appears to be a moisture effect on front (light discoloration on lower front opening edge) and on the back lower lh corner; no indications of any moisture related issue inside of jacket; 24-page booklet and Catalog Order Form are Near Mint
- Notes: This LP contains some of Sun Ra's most complex but most accessible efforts. Among the musical innovations woven into the uptempo "Brainville" and "Transition," are advanced time signatures coupled with harmonic scales based on Ra's mathematical equations. Not to be missed is the lush elegance within the delicate, if not intricate arrangements heard on "Possession," as well as the equally involved "Sun Song." Original liner notes comments are noteworthy as one of the rare occasions that Sun Ra sought to explain not only his influences, but his methods of composition and modes of execution as well. GRADING STANDARDS: (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way. Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear.
(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming.
(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
