Greetings all you record heads! I'm having to sell some treasures for my collection in order to purchase a new computer so please check my listings for other rarities and delight in excellent to mint-minus condition.
Listed here: this one is hard to describe, and also came from the collection of the jazz record collector in Kansas City that I bought a bunch of stuff from.
This is the Sun Ra album entitled: DISCIPLINE 27-II, by Sun Ra And His Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra. I only know that because I was able to Shazam it and find out!
It looks like a homemade pressing. I did a little bit of research and it seems that Sun Ra and his associates would sometimes hurriedly press a number of copies of albums on their own to sell it shows and I'm not sure if this is one of those or what? Someone else out there who is a scholar of Sun Ra likely knows a lot more about this than me.
It's just a black album with a white center label and it comes in a red sleeve that also was sold with the album because they drew on it and signed it together. And I think the autographs are what make this seemingly pretty rare Sun Ra record, particularly special.
The Center label is signed by Sun Ra himself, along with Danny Thompson, baritone sax for the Arkestra, who also wrote the word "Space."
The upper left corner of the red jacket reads "Thank You John Gilmore (saxophone, clarinet, percussion, enentually leading the band after Sun Ra's death)
Perhaps the coolest autograph on this piece of jazz music history is that of singer, dancer, violinist June Tyson, who inscribed: "Happy Space Age Barry, June Tyson."
The vinyl itself is in pretty excellent condition. On one side there is one of those weird white nicks that records received that I don't understand where they come from, but it makes a minor pop as it plays through. There are some surface markings, but nothing that detracts from the listening experience
Pretty awesome piece all in all. I wish I knew more about these weird Sun Ra autographed LPs. I know that this particular album (Discipline 27-II) is more rare than others and right now on Discogs there doesn't seem to be another copy of this particular issue of the album, although it's hard for me to consider whether or not you would call it a first press
The matrix run out on one side reads: SR 538-A
The reverse reads 538 B Stereo Quad and the little white surface nick is on side B.
This was fun for me to discover and hold onto for some time, but I have to let it go and I'm hoping it goes to a great home!
