Cover: vg+ Hard to find release on Ilhan Mimaroglu's label containing 2 excellent improvisational electronic pieces from a period when Stockhausen was moving towards free jazz. Kurzwellen involves 4 instrumentalists (on Buchla synthesizer, tam-tam, piano, and alto saxophone, plus each player operates a radio) reacting to each other and interpreting the score spontaneously while 2 other players filter and mix the output. Setz die Segel zur Sonne has roughly the same instrumentation except it involves percussion and alto and soprano recorders instead of electronic filters. This lp is especially noteworthy in that unlike most Stockhausen recordings, this one does not involve the composer's infamously iron-fisted 'supervisory' grip (which drew complaints from many performers including Vinko Globokar, since Stockhausen's strict 'directing' was viewed as stifling to true improvisation); in this way these performances can be seen as a purer distillation of Stockhausen's scores. This is also one of the only recordings which combines traditional acoustic instruments with the legendary Buchla synth; the Stockhausen-supervised DGG recordings used an Elektronium instead (The Negative Band have chosen to exercise the score's allowances for instrument substitutions). Both pieces are performed by The Negative Band live at a 1974 concert in LA; they were a group with a background in jazz formed in the early 70s expressly to bring Stockhausen's latest compositions to the US (made up of Michael Fink, Earl Howard, Denman Maroney, David Simmons, John Paul Taylor, and Jonathan Weisberger).

Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis; he pioneered musique concrete at the INA-GRM, WDR Koln, and NHK Tokyo early electronic music studios, explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal, and has worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Mauricio Kagel, Franco Evangelisti, Herbert Eimert, Bruno Maderna, and Henri Pousseur. The Buchla synthesizer, an early Moog competitor, was created by Donald Buchla; it was used by Morton Subotnick, Douglas Leedy, Paul Beaver, Bernard Krause, Toshi Ichiyanagi, etc. Stockhausen's electronic free jazz compositions from this period would influence and draw influences from Sun Ra, New Phonic Art, Jean-Pierre Drouet, Derek Bailey, Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), AMM, Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Otomo Yoshihide, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum, Cornelius Cardew, Instant Composers Pool, Jim O'Rourke, John Zorn, Borbetomagus, and Miles Davis.
