Karlheinz Stockhausen HYMNEN electronic musique concrete Double LP. 1966. Deutsche Grammophon Label. I bought this sealed and have only played it once. Sleeve and both vinyl records are basically in MINT condition.

Rare and essential gatefold double album containing Stockhausen's epic early electronic masterwork "fur elektronische und konkrete klange." In Hymnen, the composer set out to combine and derive new universes of sound from the national anthems of various nations, which he saw as "the most well known music that one can imagine"; he mixes occasionally recognizable snippets of common songs with an array of very tightly composed tape-manipulated noises. Anthems are abstractly intertwined and juxtaposed ("for example, the rhythm of one anthem is modulated with the harmony of another"). There are stabs and droning washes of electronic tones, short-wave radio sounds, various field recordings (crowds, conversations, public events/demonstrations, a diplomatic reception, bird calls), and cut-up pieces of anthems and other patriotic songs, all brilliantly mixed together and spread out over a recording lasting about 113 minutes with a huge dynamic and tonal range. It may be impossible to find such a successfully coherent and visionary epic-length electronic work by any other artist. Hymnen was realized at WDR Koln, the same studio at which Stockhausen made Kontakte and Gesang Der Junglinge (and also where Herbert Eimert, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, and Herbert Brun pioneered the medium). With extensive multilingual notes by the composer expressing an interesting post-WWII German sentiment on the nature of nationalism and the music to which it gives birth.

Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis; he pioneered musique concrete at the INA-GRM, WDR Koln, and NHK Tokyo early electronic music studios, explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal, and has worked with Pierre Schaeffer, Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Werner Meyer-Eppler, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Cornelius Cardew, Hugh Davies, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Mauricio Kagel, Franco Evangelisti, Bruno Maderna, New Phonic Art, and Henri Pousseur. Stockhausen's technique in this piece draws from the musique concrete of Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Francois Bayle, Luc Ferrari, Rune Lindblad, Pauline Oliveros, Vittorio Gelmetti, Todd Dockstader, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Dick Raaijmakers, and Henk Badings.
