Description

Steve Reich: Drumming (1971 for 8 small tuned drums, 3 marimbas, 3 glockenspiels, male and female voices, whistling, and piccolo); Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ (1973); Six Pianos (1973)

Deutsche Grammophon 2740 106 Germany 1974 3LP Box Vinyl: nm, nm-, vg+ (the 2 Drumming disks are just about perfect while the last disc has some minor scuffing)
Cover: vg+ (light wear; a small tear on the right edge has been repaired with clear tape; both corners on the bottom seam are split; radio station stamp on front) Hard to find box set with a complete live performance of Drumming, Reich's epic study of phased polyrhythms, spanning 2 disks, plus 2 other early minimalism classics on the 3rd disk. The hypnotic and meditative Drumming is structured around a single basic rhythmic pattern (notation for which is provided in the notes) which gradually undergoes changes of phase position, pitch, and timbre; the vocalists are instructed to mimic the drum sounds. The recording was made at the premier performances of the piece at Town Hall in New York in December 1971, and features the playing of Reich, Joan La Barbara (this is her earliest appearance on record), Cornelius Cardew, and other figures from the New York minimalist and avant garde scene during that period. Includes extensively illustrated insert booklet.

Steve Reich studied with William Bergsma, Vincent Persichetti, Luciano Berio, and Darius Milhaud, and is associated with the late 20th century minimalism movement along with Philip Glass, La Monte Young, John Adams, Terry Riley, Charlemagne Palestine, Phill Niblock, and Tony Conrad. Cardew studied electronic music under Gottfried Michael Koenig, worked as an assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen, also worked with Michael Parsons, Howard Skempton, and Mauricio Kagel, influenced Morton Feldman, Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars, Brian Eno, and Christopher Hobbs, and helped form improv groups AMM and the Scratch Orchestra. La Barbara is an experimental vocalist who studied under Helen Boatwright and is married to Morton Subotnick; she has worked with David Tudor, Phill Niblock, Robert Ashley, John Cage, Steve Reich, Jim Hall, Don Sebesky, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Merce Cunningham, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Kenneth Goldsmith, Judy Chicago, Lita Albuquerque, and James Tenney, and provided vocal sound effects for the Alien movies. Other references for these recordings: Pauline Oliveros, gamelan, Shri Swapan Chaudhuri, Ustad Alla Rakha, Pandit Pran Nath, Ravi Shankar.
