Description
The Forest and the Zoo was recorded in Argentina in 1966 with an interestingly international band: Lacy, born in New York, on soprano sax; Enrico Rava from Italy on trumpet, and the South African rhythm section of Johnny Dyani on bass and Louis Moholo on drums.
It’s full of driving and compelling free-jazz playing. One reviewer commented: “This is white-hot musical invention -- it meanders, swoops, soars, digs in its heels, and above all offers a staggering kind of communication between four players who took nothing for granted and knew that everything was up for grabs.”
This is the 1969 UK issue on Fontana of the 1967 US release on ESP. There’s a story that Lacy just strolled into the offices of ESP with the tape of their concert in Buenos Aires (where they had apparently been stranded) and offered to sell it. The LP is in very good condition (at least VG+ if not NM- in discogs classification), especially for something 50 years old! The cover has also survived well, except that the middle of the spine has been mistreated at some point before it became mine: part of the title has been rubbed away, leaving a small hole (see the 4th photograph).
