Original US Soundtrack LP released in 1984 on Varese Sarabande Records. Cat: STV81233.Rock & roll session guru Jack Nitzsche composed precious few film scores during the course of his long and winding career, but each and every one demands attention: while 1984's Starman represents his lone foray into the science fiction realm, it boasts a complexity and humanity quite unique within the genre, underscoring the surprising emotional heft of director John Carpenter's vision. Working primarily with electronic instrumentation and effects, Nitzsche's thoughtful melodies and arrangements capture the wonder and mystery of life beyond the stars as well as deeply human emotions like love and loss. The music is by turns epic and intimate, bleak yet redemptive.
