I suspect we have all seen/heard Stan Tracey live over the years. For me it was initially during his time at the Scott Club and then later during some of his provincial tours. His death on 6th December last - 3 weeks short of his 87th birthday - brought many tributes including Alyn Shipton's recent Jazz Record Requests programme in which all the tracks were requests for Stan. There was a request from his early 1959 'Little Klunk' album and also from what is perhaps his best known recording from 1965 'Under Milk Wood'. I have owned a copy of both these albums since they were originally released, and I am now listing them for auction here.
My first taste of Stan Tracey's music came in 1959 from a 'Little Klunk' track played on the Saturday afternoon 'Jazz Club' on the Third Programme as it was called then. I was at uni in Newcastle at the time and at 9.00 am the following Monday I bought this copy from Jeavons in The Bigg Market, (Although the biggest record shop by far in Newcastle was Windows in the Central Arcade, Jeavons had the better selection of modern jazz) What a record! Monk-like tunes - no getting away from that - and the legendary rhythm section of Kenny Napper on bass and Phil Seamen no less on drums. A point of interest; Stan plays vibes on the final track of both sides.
Please understand that this record is 54 years old and counting. My new and ultra sensitive Rega Planar turntable detects surface noise, mostly at the beginning of tracks, but overall the record plays quite well. Don't you just love these vintage Vogue labels? I remember that some of them were salmon pink, eg that on the 10" Brubeck LP 'Jazz at the College of the Pacific'. Two things about the cover. Firstly, my cheap camera has not picked up very well the yellow ageing of the front but has made it look whiter. Secondly, it has exaggerated the circular disc outline and made it look more prominent than it is. By and large I reckon the vinyl and the cover to be in a reasonably good condition for their age.
