Various: Southern Folk Heritage - Recorded By Alan Lomax (7-LP-Box)
7xLP box set of authentic field recordings made by Alan Lomax (and British folk singer Shirley Collins) in 1959 for Atlantic Records. Meant as a kind of follow-up to Alan and his father John Lomax's legendary work for the Library of Congress in the 1930s, Lomax (now with hi-fi stereo equipment) once again set out for the Southern states on a two month long tour that resulted in over 80 hours of recordings! The recordings were divided by genre and released in 1960 as a series of 7LPs now available in one deluxe box set with a 16 page booket!LP1: Sounds Of The South - The broad scope of material in the "Southern Folk Heritage Series" is presented in a fascinating way in this introductory volume. Folk ballads of Elizabethan origin, Negro instrumental music almost purely African in sound, "white spirituals," field hollers, levee camp songs and "blue grass" mountain music are just a few of the types of music touched upon in this unique
LP2: Blue Ridge Mountain Music - Features The Mountain Ramblers of Galax, Virginia, one of the best "blue grass" bands in the country. Also includes choice selections by the best folk singers, fiddlers, banjo and guitar players that Alan Lomax found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
LP3: Roots Of The Blues - Explores the older Negro blues and song forms and styles that antedate the modern, commercial blues. Runs the gamut from field hollers and train blues to levee camp songs.
LP4: White Spirituals - The older hymns of the white mountain folk have a great beauty and musical quality all their own. There are rare recorded examples here of the "lining hymn" and of the choral singing of the Alabama "Sacred Harp" Singers.
LP5: American Folk Songs For Children - 21 songs - jingles, riddles, game songs, lullabies, jiggy tunes and silly ballads - that belonged to children of the American frontier. Warmer and wittier than the traditional Mother Goose.
LP6: Negro Church Music - A soul-stirring collection of Negro spirituals and gospel songs recorded in many out-of-the-way places in the South. Wonderful examples of the older Negro choral tradition before being "prettified" and "modernized" for mass-market consumption.
LP7: The Blues Roll On - Supplements Roots Of The Blues and deals with more modern types of country blues, both vocal and instrumental. Has five fantastic songs by Forest City Joe, an Arkansas honky-tonk discovery of Alan Lomax.
