Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold, CBE (21 October 1921 – 23 September 2006) was an English composer. His output of works features music in many genres, including a cycle of nine symphonies, numerous concertos, concert works, chamber music, choral music and music for brass band and wind band. He wrote extensively for the theatre, with five ballets specially commissioned by the Royal Ballet, as well as two operas and a musical. He also produced scores for more than a hundred films, among these The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won an Oscar.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a 1958 DeLuxe Color 20th Century Fox CinemaScope film based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a tenacious British maid, who became a missionary in China during the tumultuous years leading up to the Second World War. Directed by Mark Robson, who received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director, the film stars Ingrid Bergman as Aylward and Curt Jürgens as her love interest, Colonel Lin Nan, a Chinese officer with a Dutch father. Robert Donat, who played the mandarin of the town in which Aylward lived, died before the film was released. The musical score was composed and conducted by Malcolm Arnold. The cinematography was by Freddie Young.The film was shot in Snowdonia, North Wales. Most of the children in the film were Chinese children from Liverpool, home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe.

Malcolm Arnold was a survivor! He tackled Depression & Alcoholism, and beat them both.

By 1961, Arnold had a reputation for being unpleasant, frequently drunk and highly promiscuous. He divorced his first wife in that year. His second wife was forced to take out a court order after they separated. After the divorce, he made two suicide attempts. His later years saw a decline in both health and finances. In 1978 he was treated as an in-patient for several months in the acute psychiatric ward at the Royal Free Hospital, Pond Street, London, and in 1979 he entered St Andrew's Hospital in his home town of Northampton to be treated for depression and alcoholism. He overcame both, despite being given only a year to live in the early 1980's. He lived for 22 more years, albeit with a carer, Anthony Day, and completed his 9th and final symphony in 1986. By the time of Arnold's 70th birthday celebrations in 1991, his artistic reputation with the general public was recovering and he was even able to enjoy a triumphant appearance on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall to receive an ovation after a Proms performance of his Guitar Concerto. Arnold died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich, on 23 September 2006 aged 84, after suffering from a chest infection.

Each 4 - 6 weeks (or so), I will have around 200 albums delivered to me, which I will then attempt to sort through, catalogue, clean, grade then list. I will always make every effort to ensure that the information I supply for each listing is 100% correct, and that any anomalies with each album are highlighted. I use a combination of 5 different web sites to ensure the the information I supply in the listing is as accurate as possible, so please forgive any incorrect details. I do perform my due diligence, I ask that you do the same. All this work is being done outside of 'normal' office hours. Genres will vary from month to month, so be sure to keep checking the site for new gems.

Please note that my gradings are visual only. I am very pedantic by nature and I assess/grade the vinyl (& sleeve) from a buyers perspective. My appraisals will highlight any issues or flaws. I call it as I see it, but I will always err on the side of caution. Current market trends, sales history of album/pressing, condition of item and availability within the market place, are all factors which are considered prior to pricing every album. My aim is to have every single album priced competitively within the marketplace, so please keep us in mind for a price comparison while you're shopping. I understand that everyone has their own preferred method of cleaning vinyl, so I will hand clean each album and then supply a new inner and outer protective sleeve, prior to it's journey to you.
