Description
Released by Soul City in 1968, cat # SC 108; this is “One More Chance” / “The Star” by Shirley Lawson.
This is the rarest release on Soul City and for the first time ever I can reveal why this record is so hard to find.
This record has been very well played. The official “A”-side – “The Star” has a black felt “A” on the label and the playing surface has a multitude of marks and scuffs. When played, it sounds OK though and sound like a record in very good condition, whereas it looks no better than fair.
Fortunately, “One More Chance” is a lot better. The label is nice and clean for a start and visually the vinyl is in very good condition. Playing, the track plays better than it looks and gets an excellent grading. The record comes in a plain white sleeve.
Now the history lesson.
When we acquired this collection it took quite a long time to sort through and we found all sorts of paper items with many of the records – press releases etc. In one 45 on the Toast label, we found a very curious card about “The Star” by Shirley Lawson. This is what the card says.
“We very much regret that the latest Soul City single which was to have been the above named record has had to be withdrawn at the 11th hour owing to the fact that Island Records (from whom we were sub-leasing this item) broke their verbal agreement at the last minute. In the sordid politics of the record industry (which are motivated more by greed and avarice than by love of music) it would seem that a gentleman’s agreement is worth very little.
We hope you’ll bear with us until we can locate a suitable replacement - we live and learn!”
So there you go – this 45 was withdrawn before release due to a contractual wrangle with Island. Of course the card comes with this record and I think it is safe to say you will NEVER find another such copy with this history.
All of these singles come from the same special source – an original 60’s Top Rank DJ who started in the ballrooms and progressed to radio and record production in the 1970’s. UK record delivery is an extra 70p and special delivery is £4.75. Overseas insurance will be either £3.50 or £5.50 dependent upon the value.
Payment by PayPal is preferred for all customers; though I will accept cheques or postal orders for UK customers. Overseas customers must pay by Paypal unless agreed otherwise prior to auction end.
